Job seeking tactics for the old

So I'm kinda old right, and I can't seam to land a flipping job in this great country of ours, but I'm at the point of coloring my hair.

Now this is a practice I frown upon greatly,if your old, just go with it.Anyway, has anybody colored their hair to improve your chances of landing a job?I mean I'm just trying to figure this out, maybe I'm just at the point in life that I'm over the hill as far as the job market goes?

Is 50 that old?

PS I'm not going after jobs that I'm not qualified for.

Personal networking is about the only way besides just pure dumb luck for us old folks. Most employers want the kids that don't ask for a livable wage and are willing to suk up to the powers that be with things like unpaid overtime and other benefits that management thinks they should get for free.

if it's just a number on the page, i'd say yes (i'm 65).

i don't have employees, but if i was going to hire, i would want someone to tell me how they really, really want to work for my little company and how they will make us both more money -- at least enought to cover the salary and benefits to start.

and really, you better be making a company at least 5x your cost, to get hired.

i know in my gut that my little operation could blast into the stratosphere with the right 5 extra people. but i don't get along well enough with people to want to go through that thrash just for money.

but i see a fuckton of opportunity out there, even in this slooooowly recovering economy. best of luck.

I think DTF hit it on the head. I know I've just about given up on finding a "job", even though I wasn't really looking for anything full-time. I'm just going to focus on making it on my own.

I know this to be true,I remember the good old days, being able to go out and get the first ,or second job you applied for.Now I get the interviews and even quit a few second one's.The offer is another story all together.

I've actually been buying things and re selling them for a profit. This only provides a little bit of cash, but something and its better then nothing.Sometimes I have to paint and fix these items but I enjoy fixing things anyway,so.

I could get a job from a previous employer but I would have to move my family half way across the country.

Know how you feel.I hope it works out for you.Thankfully my wife makes a decent wage.

I can't believe I got a job,I didn't have to color my hair after all, sure made the wife happy. Now things can be normal again.Another great day in America. It's nice to come home and know I have a job again.I always liked it when they offer you the job before you leave.

I can even enjoy my trip to Mn more now.Watch out all you fish,I'm back!

It would be by accident,as I'm going for pike and muskie, but you know how it goes man, nobody refuses that fish for some reason. The best part is,no one is around soaking up my rays, except for good friends and family.God I can't wait to go,it's killing me.[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]

Hey Fastcast,

Networking with others is what landed me a job at 58. Most employers are smart enough to know "Old School" work ethic and grab it before it leaves. If you've got that you'll always be able to land a job and keep it.

I put together a nice resume and made an appointment with a high-end Headhunter in a fancy part of Tucson. After about 5 minutes in his office (once I got there after waiting in the lobby for 60 minutes) he looked at me and said, "Mr. XXXX, you haven't been in the job market recently, have you?" I said no and he said, "It's changed a lot". His meaning was, "You're nice and have a decent resume but my clients are looking for recruits that have current market history with top companies."

Getting that first chance is the art....and the luck. Once I worked a week my employer would have begged me not to go. Many Gen X, Y , Z, and the newest group, the Millennials, don't have what it takes to do the job when the going gets rough. Once they've been through a few they'll figure it out, my daughters sure did, but if you have the Old School work ethic someone is going to want you.

Glad you found a job already. Now, if we could only move Arizona into the Colorado model sonn and .......

congratulations. Good luck to the rest of you. I finaly got my disability the end of last year. I still want something to do, after I'm finished caring for my wife, and will find something doing volunteer duty after I get the hell out of florida. This 90 degree heat and 90% humidity is killing me. They say Portland Or and Seattle are rainy. They should try Pensacola.

The climatic conditions that lead to Seattle rains are due to the temperate rainforest, the only one in North America. In there, and the rainforest west of the cascades annual rainfall ranges between 100-130 inches per year, which I think is round twice as much rain as Pensacola. That said Seattle only gets 45 inches a year. So...

Pensacola may not get the deep inches in rain fall but it was every day for a long time and the humidity in the 90% range with temps over 90 every day.

hang around walmart and talk to people as they go in . before long you will be hired as a greeter lol

Sure, and you'll get minimum wage and 30 hours a week if your lucky. They will not offer you a health care plan until you have been there one year; but oh yeah, you won't be able to afford it, but you will be welcome to attend one of their seminars on how to qualify for Medicare. Keep in mind that Walmart is the largest non-government employer in the world; runner up is McDonalds.

You may have the experience and skills the employer is looking for, but there are hundreds, sometimes thousands of applicants with the same skills and experience as you, and they always go with the younger applicant.

Last year Delta was hiring 100 new Flight Attendants, and they had over 1000 applicants!

The joke is on us!

And if your "lucky" enough to have a Walmart type job, they expect you to be grateful for the opportunity to work for them. All the while, you have to stand in line and beg for food stamps to be able to afford to eat while your working to make your employers rich.
