anyone into jazz???
i love jazz.
jazz is one of the most amazing artforms. people tend not to get it, either... they think it is boring, and only for snobs.
but jazz is an art that everyone can appreciate. all you have to do is let it flow through you. the rhythms make you feel alive... the harmonies open you up... the melodies take you away.
thee is nothing quite like jazz. it is the culmination of thousands and thousands of years of music. a truly american music, with roots deep in cultures from all over the planet. it is full of pain: anger, sorrow, anxiety; but also filled with such sweet bliss. it can mellow you out one second, and then in the very next second make you EXPLODE with such fervor.
jazz has no limits, no boundaries, no rules.
if you love jazz, AWESOME! talk to me about your experiences.
if you dont like jazz, i implore you to check out a little bit. you might come out a new person.
you dont have to be a fart-sniffing hybrid driver, nor do you need to be over 60 to enjoy. check this stuff OUT... burn one, snort some percs, sit back, relax, and keep an open mind. and try to keep up, it can easily go over one's head.
heres the stuff most ppl will recognize... what i think the average person thinks of when they hear "jazz"
louis armstrong - when the saints go marching in
duke ellington - c jam blues
good times dancing music, pretty straightforward, not many leaps and bounds, but fun.
they started messing around a little bit more, made some good swing, and got into this stuff called "bebop".
thelonius monk - in walked bud
still good, classic dance music, with a little more improv
during the 50's and especially 60's, a lot of the guys started branching off and experimenting. john coltrane is one of the most famous of these dudes, he made some standards, but also really helped push jazz into the extremes.
coltrane - my favorite things
i hear a rhapsody
this one is tough, but highly recommended. somewhere along the way, some dudes abandoned what we knew of harmony, and sometimes rhythm. they started getting into what is called "free jazz".
supposedly the whole band was tripping on acid during this session.
coltrane +pharoah sanders - ascension
if you made it through that, check out some cecil taylor

some of my other favorites:
ornette coleman - dancing in your head
eric dolphy (one of the greatest musicians ever to grace the earth)
god bless the child
