I've had it with heat. Help please

Howdy folks.

I’ve been growing for years and have always had heat problems. I live in a desert. I suck at doing manly things with tools and have just done what I could, portable a/c units, portable swamp coolers etc. These things always break down from overuse. I’ve found someone I trust who can do whatever carpentry/electrical work I need done.

I had done hours of research at OG regarding what I would need to make my closet cooler but I can’t find the disk with the info. It might have gotten tossed the last time I cleaned my cave. I really don’t want to start from scratch. If you can answer some basic questions, it would be appreciated.

Anyway I have a 5 foot x 5.5 foot by 11 foot high flower closet. It’s in my bedroom so I’d like to keep the noise down to a dull roar if possible. I use a 1,000 watt HPS. The ceiling has a trap door to the attic . it’s a pretty low space, not like an attic that you can make into a spare room). It’s mostly stuffed with insulation.

What would you recommend I get to cool the room down and where to vent to? I want the best, quietest products I can find. I find info on Centrifugal fans, exhaust fans and axial fans. I’m confused. What do I need?

I remember about reading about making changes so the vents that carry the air conditioning air can be routed to the flower room. I’m going to try to read up on this.

My light has a hood that will allow for tubing to be stuck onto both ends.

It’s my house so I don’t care if he needs to cut into some walls. i was thinking of venting (keep in mind I know the concept but don’t know what vents what to where) the hot air into my bathroom or the attic. If it’s 110 degrees outside, I’m wondering if venting to the attic will actually work.

In addition, any threads/ info you can point me to regards making the house safer by adding breakers or whatever has to do with electricity would be helpful. I’m pretty sure electricity is magic and I don’t F with it.

Thank you!

60 plus hits and not a word from anyone. is it my breath?

after hours of reading and searching, i still have many questions. so fuck it, i decided to buy some books. 11 years of growing and i need to buy books to figure out how to fix my room up. pitiful. damn i miss OG.

if i can't figure it out with these, i'm going to retire.

get ur balast out of the growspace for starters, aircoil your light fixture with the proper config. (outside air to light back to outside).
air conditioner (window unit in a vented rubbermaid tub to deal w/ the heat from the unit)

these 3 tips are your best option(s)
i hope this is a help to you

howdy guys.

unfortunately, the ballast, although a good one, makes too much noise to put into my bedroom. i tried it once. didn't work out. i'll see if my fix it guy can think of a way to muffel it without causing a problem. i may have my friend put it up much higher once i get the exhaust fan and whatever else i come up with. i'll probably exhaust the light too. might as well. i am leaning towards the vortex but i'm going to do some more reading.

i've looked into window unit A/Cs. i'm just not sure how well one would work in my closet. i have a portable unit that cost big bucks. i won't cycle off so i don't use it anymore. i'm hoping the exhaust fan for the light and the room will be effective. this summer, the room averaged 90 degrees. thank god for fall.

i'm kinda stoked. i've been making do with fix arounds for 11 years. time to get my room up to speed.

during the "day" i leave the door to the closet open so i won't have a problem with the room sucking in cooler air when i get an exhaust fan.

thanks for the input

get the ballast OUT of the grow space, they add lotsa heat!!!
put it in your attic or get a new (more quiet) one for your bedroom.

a window A/C in a rubbermaid tub w/ venting fan hose will run you about 250 bux to setup a 6kbtu unit.

that much heat eh? all right. i'll make a concerted effort to 1) move it or 2) get the quietest out there. makes sense. i've missed the forest for the trees.

i've got good credit so money is the least of the problems. :)
i'll look into it. where would it get the cool air from? or would it just recycle the closet air? i don't have a "closed" system as I leave the door wide open.

i am using an odd proxy and can't give karma but i do appreciate the input.

thank you!

BTW plants can tolorate more heat if u use CO2 over 900 ppm.but they'lol also need more light, water, nutes too. and if u seal/cool u can use the CO2.

the cool air to replace trhe hot air in th tub/condensor a/c could come from ur attic/under floor space , try not to the air within ur living space with you have also paid to make cool/comfortable.
i use a split a/c so i cannot elaborate much more specifics, ive just seen folks use em. (a/c in vented tub)

i've got a c02 canister, flow meter etc. i used it for a couple years. then one day i had a newly filled tank sitting in the kitchen. the seal blew. it sounded like a hurricane was in my kitchen. the tank slammed against the wall but no damage. if it would have falled on it's side it could have shot accross the room.

freaked me out. i never filled it again. if that thing would have gone off in my trunk while driving, it would have been awful hard to explain to the police and insurance people. :)

scary tank experience/story!!!
if that had been O2 w/ an acetylene next to it u might not be around to tell the story!! :yoinks:

tanks should always be chained to a stand or in some sort of holding cage
lotsa CO2 will steal the air outa ur lungs ( tank burst w/ windows up)
my friend works on soda fountains and he tells me stories about a little blast under the counter someplace is enough to mess him up for a bit.
also the regulators can blow off the stem if u dont set them right when opening ur tank valve. :badday:

be safe try to make ur show cooler!! and or more heat tolorant

We bought the cheapest AC at home depot --they're on sale these days and rigged it into a functional stand-alone. It was easy. You've just got to set up an area for the AC to drip, and figure out a way to channel the cool air to your set-up. My GF had it all setup & working in less than an hour.
equipment:
-cheap window AC
-strong wood slats
-large storage container
-4" duct
-4" duct to flat flange piece available in the home depot row with the duct
-boot-leg insulation method around duct to prevent condensation
We used the foam tape to help out the seal with the flat flange, and even duct taped the rubber material that comes with the AC to the flat flange to prevent the condensation from disrupring the seal. For picts see our grow diary. Post there if you want more details on this. total cost < $90 (not including energy bill)
