I've always just grown outdoor in the Socal sun, but coming this spring (and maybe during the winter) I want to get a HPS light to grow indoor before putting them outside.

I heard of this method from a friend but I don't know too much information. Could anyone please elaborate on this for me?

Would a 250W HPs be enough to get plants started?

hey bruddah this is what I do, I veg under lights for one month and then out they go out into my greenhouse, but you can veg longer then that if you like what you want is a T-5 HO fluorescent hood with 6500K Bulbs. They come in two foot or four foot size so you know which one you need for the size of your area you are going to veg in. The bigger the better. When you start your seedlings you want to put them on 18 hours of light, some people put there lights on for 24 hours and that is not good because your plants need rest and when they get rest that is when you get growth. Also remember this when you turn off the lights make sure they are in complete darkness for there sleep time any light when they are sleeping can turn your plants hermi.

I always thought the uninterupted dark phase was only critical in flowering stage.

A plant sees an interruption of its dark period as another day -- a short day. We don't want our plants confused with a 16 hour day followed by a 3 hour night then a 1/2 hour day and then another 4/1/2 hour night.
