Root rot is usually slimy I think.
Certian nutes turn roots brown from staining.
You will never get rid of hydroton dust. Mine is 1.5 years old, cleaned all the time, it just continues to break down and create dust. No biggie

yer id agree not overly healthy but no rot, next time give the plants alittle more root space or grow more plants. Heat or high water temps was the killer for my recirc efforts, so i gave up the rocks for more insulated medium in coco ( bigger rootzone would do simular ie reduce heat when pumps oFF, if water is above 25c thats warm to hot making it an up hill battle. get a good root tonic or rhizotonic on these puppies and all new roots onwards will improve if yemps are good also.
