Is this common or do I have something here?

I have never seen anything like this in my time of growing Cannabis. Its supposedly a Cheesus from Big Buddha Seeds and it's been in my line up for for years, don't really remember when I acquired this seed. It has three buds growing per level instead of the usual two. When it sprouted, it had THREE cotyledon!

I took clones but none exhibit the same characteristic.

Cool! It's called whorled phyllotaxy. You can do a search, there's been quite a few posts about it. We used to call them trifoliates which is really when a leaf is divided into three leaflets. It's fairly common although almost all the ones I've had over the years were males. Your pictures show the advantage a female with the mutation has, three buds instead of two!

its called a triploid and its pretty common. i grew one out in flower and it was junk. sometimes they will not thrive and it self tops or doesn't produce a growing tip.

Whorled phyllotaxy, not super rare but not that common either.
Having it stay through flowering is a bit more rare i believe. usually they grow out of it, the several i have encountered have.
Novelty factor and increased yield are both possible reasons to keep it if it is good.
Horribly purple photos but nice looking plant as far as i can tell.

nope.

ok, I was wrong thinking triploid was more of a genetic thing.
It is a genetic thing that can lead to whorled phyllotaxy.
My bad.

i thought the reason it had whorled phyllotaxy was due to an extra set of chromosomes? why does it have three nodes?

It seems like every few months this comes up, probably one of the most 'common/uncommon' topics in cannabis growing. I forget all the answers but there's been many discussions over the years. Here's a couple links:

I get the three leaf one out of 15 plants popped,
seems to be a wide leaf thing and potency doesn't
correlate to the event.

Novelty aside, I haven't read anything that supports
the need to keep based only on its unusual three leaf trait.

In the bag, no one knows it was whirled.

From my current batch:

Hello and thanks for the info. I had no idea that a trait like this existed! I've started on those thread, thanks therevverend!

In my experiences they don’t really yield more. I’ve had a few girls with the trait all the way thru flower and the yields seemed about the same as a normal plant, just more buds.

That is probably due to the volume of roots controlling plant size and what the flower yield will be.

As mentioned earlier, most seem to turn out male.
