Is this a new bulb?

Hello All,

Just opened up my new HPS bulb and i'm thinking it may be used. It has dark marks on the top and bottom of the glass. There also looks to be debris or scuff mark on the outside of the glass. I was already planning on going to flower today so i installed the light and there is a slight hiss or hum coming from it. does this look and sound like a new light?

Is an used bulb. You can see if the bulb was lighted before (and a lots of time after the look), if you look closely to the arctube. on an unused bulb there is no blackening on the end of the arctube (where the electrodes are) and also you can see a small pile of metallic sodium, like 1/4 match head quantity. When the arc is ignited for the first time, this sodium vaporizes and will deposit on the coolest part of the arctube, that will be the ends of the tube and there will be no sodium pile anymore..

Where did you buy it from?? I have often wondered if the bulbs on Ebay advertised are new are really used bubs out of someone's warehouse grow. Especially when they are sold at a fraction of retail.

The bulb looks used but had you already fired it before the pics were taken? Just asking as I am no bulb expert.

Im interested in hearing some bulb smart guys opinions!!

Peace

Thanks all. I did purchase through eBay but the company has a brick and mortar local store. I figured it wouldn't have the "eBay" issue since they have a physical location. I'm waiting to hear back from the company in question if they will replace the bulb.

Either way i'm going to pickup a new bulb from a different hydro shop. The humming/buzzing from the bulb is very concerning to me. After this is all settled i'll post the company in question.

What kind of bulb is it? (Manufacturer) Also, are you running this bulb on a digital ballast? What kind and model of ballast are you using?

From uthenger's point of view looks like a high pressure sodium bulb manufactured by Philips, the SON-T series.
On the picture provided you can see that not only the arctube, but also the outer clear glass ends are discolored, uthenger thinks that this discoloration has to do with the buzzing described by @SoCalGrown, and he/she mentioned that there are scrapping marks on the outside of the bulb. So definitely is not a brand new bulb.
If was advertised as "New" and not "Used" condition on the eBay, then he can make a claim for item not as described, and PayPal will refund his money.

Later I saw that the brand and model is clearly visible on the picture: YIELDLAB SUPER HPS 600W-E 0415

Thanks for all the input. The company is replacing the bulb, all i had to do was provide pictures. They admitted that it looks used and said they'll send a new one out. The new bulb is scheduled to show up today so i'll be able to compare them better. Given the company took care of the issue i don't really think its necessary to post the company name. Posting the bulb brand would also give away the company name. Thank you all for your help on this.

It looks new to me. And if it has been used it was only used for less than 1 month. The inner workings of the bulbs get black pretty quickly.

There is a scam where someone buys a bulb, uses, then buys a new one, then returns it back to the retailer with the used bulb. Then they may just put it back on the shelf..
That could be what happened.
