Scratch built for a 150W, but will fit a 400:

The glass tube is called a bake around. ebay or yard sale is only source.

Why not just use a reducer from 6" to 4" on both sides of the 6" cool tube? The little bit of size increase from a 4" cool tube to a 6" cool tube, should matter. As the plants wont be that lose to the cool tube anyways.

Do you think a 400hps would be too hot for this?

I think you're in mostly uncharted territory. You could set it up like a test bench & fire up the whole tube/light/fan combo in the middle of a concrete floor, see what happens. If it goes wrong, cleanup is easy.

I needed some 2 inch diameter quartz glass for a little chemical engineering set-up.

Got it from a place that does ornamental glass everything. Part of their working stock I guess.

4 inch diameter is a little large for glass tube but it's out there.

Are there any good designs that use acrylic tube to help cool ?

No, the 150w I used in this rig always stayed within ambient
temp + 5-7 degrees F.

Two fans.

This tube pulled ambient and had a separate exhaust outside
the grow area.

Never over 90 degrees F 4" from glass in a non climate controlled
area. I could hold the tube in my hand easily after the lamp was
at full power.

With a 400w in a area that has climate control, I believe it
would perform well, just don't lick it, lol.

But like jhhnn says, bench test to check for errors.

Alright Brainzfuxed,

Have you look at Greens/hydroculture 5" Goldstar air cooled hood? My footprint is approx the same as yours and I have to say it's tight but hooked up two 90 bends at the intake/output to ensure the ducting remains open and got 6" accoustic ducting - as said all in it's tight but seems to be working - it says on the leaflet the hood can handle 600w.

Cheers
