Is there a way to make my inline fan quieter?

I have a 6" Vortex inline fan (449 cfm) for my grow room. It is also on a speedster on the low setting. My grow room is real small for that big of a fan... Is it possible to quiet the fan itself? If so how?

Hey there,

I had the same problem as you but i didnt really research at all..

i built a muffler using a 20gal rubbermaid heavy duty trash can.. cut holes for the ducts, insulated the inside.. voila

it works okay, not great... there are probably a lot better plans out there and i hope they are posted here so I can use them too :)

Before the inline fan, I could stand next to my garden answering detectives questions about the dead guy on the other end of the house. Literally.

When I first turned on the inline fan, I was terrified my neighbors across the street would come over to investigate. Adding the fan speed controller, I only worried about the neighbors next door. Adding the muffler, I could no longer hear it from inside the house. Adding the cooler I can now open my garage door but, I can't let anyone in the garage because there's only one explanation for the noise. It's a muffled fan connected to a stealth garden and that's not an explanation I care to give.

If I lose any one of the three elements I'm screwed noisewise. That's why I want to rework the cooler. Maybe throw it in a wardrobe box stuffed with foam as well. I'm beginning to think stealth and inline can't be used in the same sentence.

Thanks for the input everyone. I started to work on it today. I had some egg crate foam and some one inch thick styrofoam sheets that are like 3'x6'. I tried to insulate better in between the joyces above the fan and I wrapped the fan with the foam. I think I had minimal success so far. I need to build a box for the fan I think.

The fan is setup on the outside wall of the grow room, I just cut a 6" hole to put the flange through and then I mounted the bracket on the joyce above. Then the carbon filter is right on the fan also on the outside of the room with the air being sucked out of the room, if that helps any...

hey apg, I got the same fan as you and I also want to muffle the noise and vibrations the fan makes more. I wrapped the fan in self-adhesive foil and foam duct insulation and that seemed to help reduce the noise some, but I still want to reduce the sound more.

I think the best way to muffle the sound from the fan would be to build a box for the fan using mdf or something like that and then lining and packing the inside of the box with some sound insulating foam. But Im lazy and that would take too much damn work.

I was thinking the next best thing would be to wrap the fan in sound insulating foam and then wrapping the foam up with black trash bags and taping it up. I looked up some sound insulating foam on the web and found a site that sells 24square feet for 16 buxs. They claim a Noise Reduction Coefficient of .81 for the foam.

I think I "might" buy some and try wrapping it on top of the insulation I already have on my Vortex, Im sure it will help some but Im not sure how much it would help... Gotta try it out I guess.

I know making a box would work because I have my Vortex inside a cabinet which Im growing in and the cabinet reduces the sound probably by half, adding another box to the fan would surely reduce the sound alot more but damn Im lazy!

Apg, Was the foam you used on your fan sound insulating foam or just some random type of foam? How much did it help?

The foam I used was like your typical egg crate bedding foam. I found a couple pieces in the garage. I haven't built a box yet so the amount of reduction in noise was not that much. Also the foam doesn't have a lot of mass which i think will be key, and why the foam you are talking about would be so much better.

Somehow I am going to build a box for the bastard, but I haven't come up with any great designs yet...The lazy factor isn't really an issue for me as I would just like to do it right and be done with the fabrication of the grow room so I can focus solely on growing. I'll probably get back to work on it tomorrow and I'll be sure to post an update and some pics so that you guys can see what I'm working with.

Thanks for the ideas, keep em comin!

Search this forum for muffler in titles only gives a number of examples. I used this one.

I also put the fan in a cooler. I should try turning the fan 90 degrees so the intake side is actually connected by the hose, then I can pack the cooler with foam or polyfill.

I'm into the whole design and all, but how can it bring fresh air into the grow room if it is inside the cooler?

This is the tail end of the exhaust. I'm growing in a stand up freezer that has two passive intake holes at the bottom and one exhaust at the top. The exhaust is connected to the ducting you see going into the end of the cooler. The ducting exiting the side of the cooler goes to the muffler.

I could've and should've done a better job with the design but, tried to bull my way through while suffering with the flu.

My space is 54 inches tall, much of which is chewed up by platforms, buckets and reflector. I'm growing T Haze x Skunk1, a plant known to take 120 days and more to flower. I feel the need to hold on to every vertical inch I have. If, at the end of the grow I still have 12 inches to spare, I'll place the fan inside the freezer. I can only imagine the freezer would block more noise than the cooler if there's room for it inside.

Good for you, you are certainly an resourceful person. I like your style.

When it comes to the noise from my fans, as a rule, I use elicent. Their in-lin fans are the shit and very quiet.

Good growing friend!

Well after some more work I have figured out that the noise that is really the problem is the hum from the motor which is being caused by my fan speed controller. I bought the speedster inline fan speed controller from my local hydro shop.

So now what I need to do is to find a fan speed controller that isnt a variable one like the speedster and one that just has the high, medium, and low settings. The ones they sell at the local hardware store aren't beefy enough for my 6" vortex (100 watt). I found that out by blowing up a power strip after I tried to switch my fan to the "low" setting...

Anyone use anything like that currently or know where to get one? There are plenty of "no-hum" fan speed controllers but only for like ceiling fans that I can see. I need one rated for more than 1.5 amps.

The noise of the fan isn't my prob. it's the air. How do I muffle the sound from the air. I have my vortex hanging from bungi cord and can't hear the fan it's self very much if at all. lots of wind though.

If you have a little cash and want to get rid of odor as well, carbon filters work really well for both noise and smell :rasta:

PeaceOut :rasta:

so by making the can fan push the air in the filter. I would get reduced sound? i am in process remodeling shit in the grow spot and reduce noize would be a dream comed true
