Well if oil is indeed running out...there is no way biofuels will be the future..most of the agricultural equipment and ferts still need oil. And if you think we can keep this many humans with organic farming...think again.

I used to study agriculture (i quit) and if you think i am a pessimist..you should have seen my professors lol :D

The only way to a sustainable future is a massive die off...Why the **** do we need 6-7 billion humans anyway ? Think about it..it's totally stupid..

I dont know if peak oil is real or not..but it is totally possible. It wont run out but there wont be enough to keep our ever growing, ever demanding, ever wasteful societies afloat...

You get what you put in...and if you only take well the answer is obvious is it not ?

Above is most likely scenario.I wish I was 23 and had just read Jack Herer's book, back on my acres in Chama NM.Ain't nuthin' left there but a dream and a backcountry ski spot...and a few big holes in the ground. Now on the left coast with kids and work, I only use solar panels for bilge pumps, running lights and a slow trickle charge.....PEACE!!MUCHA LUCHA!!!!

All that jazz is just fine by me, we need a good 'old fashioned destabilizing influence around here.

you work in the "bizz" and that is your advice..LMFAO :bashhead:

everyone can not have their own oil well I'm sorry....still LMFAO

my dad is a chemical/petrolium engineer and he owns a VERY successful company (he designes, builds, and sells refineries).

tell me "okwildfire" how u plan to refine this "raw crude' out your 8 inch hole?

Yukon I wish I had your optimism, but gravity has jaded mine.Might there not be a Mc Donalds in Anchorage. There will always be McDonalds frying fries. You've some excellent ideas and intelligent posts, don't lose that vigor and keep on trying.Sometimes I'm here just to relate other times to laugh at Al Gore fans.Either way, keep it up and maybe I'll see you jumping out da chopper next to me in Valdez come April....PEACE!!!!!MUCHA LUCHA!!! :joint:

I am not too familiar w/ alaska's climate but, I know that peanuts, poppies, canola, flax, cotton, sunflowers, and of course hemp all produce copious amounts of oil. Cotton requires a lot of hand processing, and im not sure on AK's regulations on poppies, but its still illegal under the federal gov. Good luck bro!

A little off topic but something that was mentioned to me a few years ago, that pops into my head whenever someone talks of oil
But here is the jist of it
We pump out oil out of the earth
Oil has a mass which is part of the total mass of the earth
We refine oil and a good portion of it is burnt off into the atmosphere
Would this not change the mass of the earth?
Does mass not effect gravity?
is gravity not important?

^^^^^^^

Oil doesn't make up that much mass . Besides , much of the weight is in carbon and what gets burned off in the atmosphere stays there for a while , but eventually returns back to the earth (i.e. brought back by rains or absorbed by plants)

No kidding . The problem isn't drilling all that privately owned oil , it's getting the permits to refine it . There hasn't been a new refinery built in America for a few decades now , and I haven't heard any rumors or reports of a new one to be built any time soon .

BTW - NOKUY , since your so close to large volumes of snow , ice , & water ; start looking towards Hydrogen . Diesel engines can be ran off of pure hydrogen . The website I posted above is mainly geared towards the hydrogen industry . They have a lot of do-it-yourself books available that covers everything from making hydrogen and fuel cells to converting engines .

^ Still with the hydrogen...

Why oh why would you use hydrogen ? Why not just use the power from the wind, sun and store it in batteries if needed..

Why would you want to waste all that energy making hydrogen ? And you cant even store it!

i would rather run a diesel engine on SVO...atleast oil plants dont cost a shitload to grow..

Hydrogen has been stored as a compressed gas since the late 1800's . Compressors are not hard to come by . Wind , rain , hydro , batteries may be enough for the basic necessities but can they really sustain a grow as well ? Biodiesel/VO maybe the best option to run generators right now ; but seriously , will they be available in Alaska if our economy sinks ? If so , what will they cost ? Wind , sun , hydro can be used to create the electricity necessary to produce hydrogen .

some good thoughts here guys!

I've recently seen propane gennys too, and I am curious about that...especially since a propane genny should be easy to converted to run off of natty gas.

..and a personal natty gas well isnt out of the question.

only argument I have in this thread...

...like I said my dad designes, builds, and sells refineries.

also peeps need to look a northern alberta Canada for oil "oil sands"...talk about a fukin gold mine.

I was thinking down in the lower 48 when I posted that . I haven't followed the peak oil scare for a couple years now . Looks like I have to do some catching up on the latest news . I was under the impression that our current refineries were just being upgraded as needed . Talk to your dad and give us a little more insight on the future of the refinery business here in the US .

You might want to consider an ethanol generator, since ethanol is essentially pure alcohol it could be produced w/ potatos, sugar, or any kind of cereal (wheat, corn, rye, rice, etc,...) I'm pretty sure you could grow potatos, or cold weather cereals in Alaska, but i wonder how much ethanol you would need to power your home.
