Is it ok to smoke on ssri's?

I would think it would be ok though dont quote me on this. The one thing I know you cant do is take any depressant drugs (alcohol for example). Not sure about weed though.

this would be a great question to ask an actual doctor. there are cannabis specialist doctors who you could ask via email:
http://www.canorml.org/prop/215physicians.html

i have read about increased heart rate associated with cannabis and certain types of antidepressants. you most definintely should consult a doctor about this.

edit.. a quick search found these:

SSRI's or Selective Serotonin Reuptake inhibitors work by not allowing the serotinin to be re absorbed thus leaving it in the synapsis longer. Marijuana has some cocurrent effects which means you'll have a plateau on some strains(indica doms) they just simply wont get you really really high, just kinda stoned. Sativa's seem to not interact the same way and often times can generate a more intense high than an indica can while taking SSRI's

DO NOT take any MAOI's, Benzo's(xanax ect..) or Tricyclics. DO NOT take St Johns Wort(it lowers the ssri effect)

Stay away from drugs that deplete serotonin such as X or any amphetimine derivitive.

what are you taking SSRI's for? If you're taking them for depression then stay away from heavy(overripe) indica dom strains, find a nice uppity sativa if you want to get high.

realize that if you are taking SSRI's for mental health effects then by smoking pot you're changing your baseline. In order to feel better and have a better grasp on the world I would suggest laying off the pot for a month, this will allow time for the cannabloids to leave the body, for your body to reach a sober baseline and time for the SSRI's to generate an effect so that you actually feel better and develop a "normal" baseline. By doing thing you'll learn how you feel, this will allow you to remember this in the future and will help prevent relapse.

hope the info helped, feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

I found this on the net

Marijuana is what pharmacologists call a "dirty" drug. It contains not only psychoactive tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), but 65 other cannabinoids which may modulate THC's effects and produce others of their own. It's therefore impossible to precisely define the effects produced by cross-medicating marijuana with antidepressants.

.........................................

At least one major drug testing authority agrees. "SSRIs can and will elevate levels of THC in urine because the SSRIs are being preferentially excreted before the THC," observes Dr. Lester Lee, former head of the United States Olympic Committee's drug testing arm and director of Arista Medical in Huntington Beach, Calif. "Someone previously testing at levels of 50-100 nanograms of THC may wind up testing at 100-400."

I used to take Paxil, and would smoke weed. They went great together actually. I found myself leaning towards the pure sativas though, since Paxil is kinda sedating.

I have a large o-chem background and an interest in the human brain. Not a docter(yet) but it is what I study. :joint:

that article is exactly what I mean by Cocurrent effects. In some cases they both do the same thing, which means the SSRI's slowly bring you up over a 2-3 week time frame so you never feel "stoned" but when you smoke a bit of pot there isn't that much serotonin in reserve so you don't get super stoned, just a bit.

There is evidence that Sativa's do more with Dopamine, Norepinephrine and sometimes Phenylethylamine. These are all neurotransmitters in your brain. The fact is that sativas don't interact with Serotonin as much as indica's do, this simple reason accounts for the differences in the feeling of the stone.

In my experience, I have been on Xanax 2mg & Paxil .5mg for anxietyfor almost 2 years now, and only crazy sativas get me feeling weird if I smoke too much

edit: I just cant wake & bake anymore, bc I take my pills in the morning, I always fall asleep/

smoking whilst taking any ssri will cause you problems at the start of your treatment, this isnt major, its quite regular & you will level out and enjoy a smoke again,
people often report at the start of a course of meds that they have made their condition worse by taking these pills, ridiculous as it sounds, this is progress as you need to 'charge' your body up to a tolerant level of the meds, then they start to work
obviously you arnt just taking these this for a laff, but for a condition diagnosed by your doc, does your doc know you smoke? tel him/her, worst case senario will be the MJ is causing the trouble.......
remember when you first took that 1st toke? high as fuck & loving it for hours, after a few more goes you develope a tolerance and find your plateau (spell check that, aka platform in which is most comfortable for you)
same will apply for your meds, it will take a while to enter your bodys traffic and find its place to start working, meanwhile you may encounter some minor discomfort until they start to sort you out, it may prolong your treatment longer than needed but all in all if your gonna smoke, go easy & do some research of your own for your specific condition, it may just be a lifestlye change you need & not harsh chemicals (by that i dont mean turn gay or anything, diet, exercise, fresh air etc etc (i know it sounds corny but its better than popping pills)

I would like to add my experience.

I have been taking SSRI's for over 10 years, 9 on Zoloft, and then switched to Prozac just within the last year (against my wishes, but at the will of my insurance provider).

I was also recently prescribed a benzo(temazepam) by the same doctor, so I doubt there is any danger in taking benzo's while on SSRI's.

As for cannabis, I have noticed I outsmoke everyone I know, maybe its from the SSRI, or maybe cause I smoke more than most of my peers. Hasnt become a problem for me with all the high potency strains that are available to me.

IMO, it is safe to smoke on SSRi's, but I would avoid booze if possible (trust me!)

ChaoticEntity's info and advice seems very sensible to me

maybe you could rephrase the question, as it seems to me there are two issues raised:

1. "is it safe to smoke on SSRI's?"

2. "is it advisable from the point of view of my psychological well-being to smoke on SSRIs?"

since I'm not qualified or knowledgeable enough to answer either with confidence, I will avoid muddying the waters

I might add that I doubt anyone here could answer question 2 properly without knowing why you have been prescribed them, or knowing you personally

Namkha

p.s. just to add that, from personal experience, I would strongly advise you to stay away from all such medication unless you absolutely feel you are incapable of living another day without such help

my experience of coming off prescription anti-depressants was that it made me close to suidical - which was utterly out of character, and not even a reason for me to be on them in the first place... within about 2 weeks of coming off I was totally clear of any such thoughts and feelings...

my advice: stear clear of Xanax (not an SSRI) and anything similar, if any doc tries to prescibe it for you

^^i agree with the xanax advice..

i just want to repeat my advice to TALK TO AN ACTUAL DOCTOR about this. drug interactions can be very serious. yes cannabis is relativlely harmless but SOME ssri's can cause tachacardia (increased heart rate) when used with cannabis, just something you should be aware of.

Ex of mine used to smoke with me when she was on Paxil. She was totally fine, but she couldn't have an orgasm. It sucked!

What about cannabis and MAOI's? I once ate hash and drank passionflower tea and I probably had the worst experience of my life but still I am not sure if it was caused by those two because I seriously doubt that there is any MAOI's in passionflower, to test these doubts I drank twice the amount with alcohol but nothing apart from getting drunk happened. I know it was stupid, so please don't yell...
