Is glossy oil paint for a growroom a bad thing?

Hello fellow ICMAGERS,
I was recently looking for a paint that mold can not grow on and after speaking with someone who makes paint, I was told to use oil paint for exterior balcony with at least a semi gloss. I was told not to mention that it was for my gyprock walls when I was goanna buy my paint because they are not allowed to sell flamable oil paint for indoors.
My question is, is the paint toxic for my plants and does anyone have any experience with this kind of paint for his growroom and might wanna share some advice?
Thanks

Flat white reflects more light than gloss white. Wrt mold (if I am not mistaken) grows on anything. Plus...

Hello fellow ICMAGERS,

after doing so research on how to prevent mold from growing in my sealed room with sometimes 70% humidity. I fell upon 2 products.
zissner primer and elastomeric roofer paint. Any advice as to which one I should pick?
Thanks

It would have proved beneficial to all if you stated in your original post it was a sealed room. I also highly recommend you do an independent research on the subject e.g paint vice cannabis, let me explain...

The topic is paint regardless if it is used in a grow room or not, although I will concede that most rooms (houses) aren't kept at 70% RH.

Elastometric paint might indeed be a solution, but because it is an elastic polymer, any piercing of the surface/skin will create an unwanted environment on the underside, keep that in mind. :tiphat:

There are mold resistant water based paints available. Flat white provides a better light distribution than gloss or semi-gloss.

I grow in a damp basement. I do not have mold issues when the humidity is at 65% or below. I used a flat white interior latex wall paint for the concrete block walls.

I'd stay away from oil based paint in a grow room.

In the art world, dealers can tell the difference between a painting done in oils vs. liquitex just by smelling the painting, even after 30 yrs. the oil painting still gives off fumes. ;)

yep, oil paint takes many years to dry completely and the thicker the paint the longer the paint below the surface needs to totally dry out. Prints tend to dry quicker tho.
(And yet many dealers think forgeries are the real deal , hehe) ;)
the paint you´d get for painting walls, is different I guess. But Water-based paint is more environmentally friendly :) And probably cheaper too :)

:thank you: Yes, this! Does anyone remember years ago the obscure problems experienced growers were having that were finally traced back to vinyl grow tents?

off-gassing, toxic chemicals that include phthalates, lead, flame retardants, and VOCs like formaldehyde, it's always a possibility! ;)

I hadn´t of of all this before and it´s very interesting. I don´t recall this mentioned on the old forums when I was still there. Mind you I did stop growing for such a long time...

the problem with the grow tents was fixed long ago but it took a good while to discover the cause, which is why I'd stay away from oil based paint, vinyl flooring, etc. :)

Thanks for all your help guys. I went with an outdoor waterproof elastomeric acrylic latex paint that is guaranteed for life. This paint is made to shrink and expand and can be stretched up to 6 times its size. This will ensure that it won't crack and my room will be even better sealed. Oil paints are mold proned due to its organic properties. And the tent issues were exactly why I wanted to make sure not to put something that would offgas and cause me issues in the long run.
