Is an 8wk strain 7 plus flush?

When A strain says it's flower time is 8 weeks is that 7 weeks plus 1 for flushing or should it be flowered for 8 weeks and flushed for 1?

Thank you?

an 8 week strain is almost always 9-10.
I disagree. Yes I have gotten strains that go longer than stated. Mostly though I've found that they are close. If your buying from a reputable breeder I'm sure its closer than not. The only way to know for sure is to use a 30x-60x scope when working with something new. Your going to need to know how long it takes the plant to ripen to the point you like, then know to flush a week or 10 days before then.

I have really few experience on this, but my common sense tells me that 2 week difference comes from if they are fully mature when flipped or not..if it takes 2 weeks to show sex it feels kinda obvious it takes 2 weeks longer than a plant thats showing sex already and starts budding right away..:2cents:

This is a good question and one that I dont fully know the answer too. I think there is alot of deciding factors in the length of flower time. For instance I think a 1kw will mature quicker then 600w or smaller. Thats why its nice to have one of those cheap microscopes, I pull at 20% amber. To answer your question I would have to say that a true 8 week is a 7 week with a week flush though. Of course its more appealing to buy beans when they say harvest will be ready up to two weeks sooner. Thats what I think Iron man was getting at when he said 9 to 10 weeks. People just dont know the true length of the strain.

I never flower a plant without it having shown its sex first. For me the breeders times typically represent lower bounds on finishing times, which is to say that some plants might-will finish by them, but most will take a few weeks longer.

Thank you everyone! I will take it that a strain claiming to be an 8 week strain it will be 8 weeks from the time you go 12/12 to the day of harvest (Give or take).

Thanks again!

Keep in mind...
smaller plants (24 inches or under) usually mature a bit faster than their taller bigger counterparts.

Note that not all strains get thown in flower immidetly you switch to 12/12. I've had strains that took about 2 weeks to acctually start flowering after i switched the light.
And that was after the plant had shown sex.

Yes.. aaaaand, it's a bit more complicated than that due to inconsistencies in the community and growers.

Some breeders go by the outdoor flowering time, counting from the time the plant starts to show sex. Many don't list this in their descriptions.

The more experienced breeders have come to understand this and list the indoor flowering times for their strains starting from when you flip to 12/12.

Growers can also stall the development of their plants and extend flowering time significantly.

#1 id flush longer.
A pack of seeds will be ready at diferent times , because of diferent flowering times , between phenotypes.Even identical clones can take longer to finish than one another , because of inconsistancys in the enviorment.

An important thing to consider is that it mostly amounts to personal preference.I just smoked a purple mr.nice clear trichs , they tell me that they cut it early because costomers where getting knocked out.
If my sats arent a little over ripe then they make my wife nervouse.
Because of these inconsistancys , & personal preferancer , some breeders list the earliest possible flowering times to sell seeds.

Get an iluminated photo lupe $20 ,& harvest by looking at the trichs.

I think most people get confused bout finishing times due to the fact they incorrectly date the onset of flowering. Alot of new growers tend to count flowering from day one of 12/12 whereas this tends to be inaccurate even when preflowers are present at the time of the switch. The hormone shift to full on flowering takes a few days of 12 hours uninterrupted darkness. Plants that are immature (short to no veg time.) tend to take as much as a week or more to be in full flowering.

I never go by the breeder's flowering times. I know my environment is different, so with new strains I run 'em til they're done and add or subtract a few days to adjust for preference.

Here is a quote I found online that makes me think breeders are telling us to flush an 8 week strain in 8 weeks thus making it a 9-9.5 week strain;

Breeder-Predicted Bloom Length as Marijuana Harvest Indicator

If you’re buying quality genetics from professional breeders like Dutch Passion, TH Seeds, Sagarmatha, Sensi Seeds, Delta-9, Serious Seeds, and other established seed breeders, you can absolutely rely on their bloom length estimates. For example, if you’re growing Kushage from THSeeds, they give you a 66-70 day flowering estimate. If you’ve grown your Kushage properly so it didn’t fall behind due to hydroponics nutrients issues or other problems, you can count on that 66-70 day window. When your plants hit 66-70 days in bloom, it’s time to flush and cut.
