Is a 400W MH Ok For A Couple Of Mothers?

That should be fine. I kept 3 moms under 6 40 watt fluoro tubes. After 3+ months the 6" clones turned into well over 200 cuts...waaaay more than I needed. It partly depends of how many cuts you need each cycle.

Oh my... use the search button, do some research. This question is way too basic.

A quick search will show you millions of topics asking how much light to use...

For veg a minimum of 25-40 watts per square foot
For flowering they recommend 50 or more watts per square foot

So that means, you can have a 400watt light over a 3x3 area without any problems... and in a 3x3 area you can fit 9 SOG'd plants, or 6 bigger plants.

A friend keeps 3 mothers under a 600 and that is definitely a bit too much for em. They have to trim halfway through each cycle due to excessive growth. I told them to install fluoro tubes to slow growth, reduce heat and elec bills a bit then use the 600 2 weeks prior to taking cuttings. When the cuts are taken move the fluoros over the cuts and when done put em back over the moms.

Oh my ... did you even bother to read the question?

He's not asking about vegging or footage or area or flowering or sogging or plant numbers or anything else you wrote about. He's asking about maintaining moms.

Will 400 work? Sure. But, I gotta say it sounds like overkill for maintenance of mothers.

I've used the fluoros for the past 6 months and really like em but do prefer to hit em with something more powerful a few weeks before taking cuts...the cuts seem to be stronger. I've never used a 250 watt and like the coverage I get with the fluoros...about 4' x 3'...better, more even spread than with a 250.

But you're right you can probably do just fine with a 250...I just always like a little extra oomph.

Thi is a great question as I too was wondering. I never kept moms before and have a perpetual garden. I take cuttings of the lower branches just before I trigger, but I am finding that it's hard to keep everything going smoothly this way. I think I need a couple mothers in order to even things out and produce as much as I can in the shortest amount of time. Right now I have a 400 HPS, so I am planning on using that.

Anyone know an average (very average) number of clones you can get from say 3 plants under a 400 every 5 weeks? I know it depends on strain and other things, but just a very average guess to know where to start would be nice.

Thanks in advance, and thanks for asking the question so I don't have too lol.

When I did perpetual, I had two mothers under twin 23 watt CFLs. I took 6-10 slips every two weeks, alternating between the moms.

Yeah but if a 400w can effectively cover 9 full grown plants in a 3x3 footprint... don't you think its obvious the 400w will work just fine for 2-3 moms like he is asking?

There ya go. Much better answer. Logical, on point, friendlier too.

I was just surprised to see you playing the "search" game after taking Pirate to task for using it on you.

OK...I actually ended up with approximately 300 cuts...vegging 3 6" plants 24/0 in a 3' x 4' space with 240 watts of fluoros (6 x 40 watt tubes) for 3+ months...yikes!

The thing I like about the fluoros is their rectangular footprint. For me that works great in the space I have.
