If I came up with a novel idea, and wrote a blog...hell... even an article or a forum topic on it...

Would it be somehow protected under copyright?

In other words...if people decided to write books based on this idea, would they be forced to mention my name, or risk plagarism?

How would I go about making sure everyone knew that it was ME who came up with the idea... ?

You can Copywrite specific text you write...but an Idea...well, change it minutely...and it is different--

As long as your intellectual property is copyrighted material, then I'm pretty sure you could have a case against someone who plagiarized your work. I'm not entirely sure but I think thats it.

you need to put in text on the item, copyright <symbol> <your name> 2007. all rights reserved. If not then you would need to argue over it if it came to it.

I deal with copyright issues quite often.
It is more than putting the symbol. You actually have to copyright it. It's not expensive.
Anything published gets copyrighted upon publishing, so if you write a book the publisher does not want YOU to copyright it.
Forums are not published, but blogs are in a kind of gray area right now.
With blogs it is best to also copyright if you think someone might appropriate it.

Ideas are sketchy but if it is a story line you can protect it by self publishing a summary or synopsis. Register it with the copyright office. And/or register mail a copy to yourself or lawyer if you have one. If someone heisted your idea and fleshed it out into a novel or screenplay you would still need to sue them but you would at least have factual evidence that it was your story. You would need a saavy lawyer to win.

Visual material like movies, artwork, t-shirt, DVDs and other stuff can be registered on one CD-rom or DVD for a flat fee of $20. As long as the material is in collection form. So say you love barndoors. And you photograph them, paint them, write songs about them, etc. you could register it as the barndoor collection. One fee covers all the work depicted on the CD or DVD.

Screenplays and plays can be copyrighted but you may run into trouble later if a company wants to option your work for potential production. It is best to register s script with the Writer's Guild or like organization. This gives accredited proof that you wrote the work at a specific time and place.

Anything can be appropriated and unless you really build a good case and keep excellent records it is hard to win. BUT for example, a photographer who made his money selling pictures to be made into post cards had one of his images appropriated by the artist Jeff Koons. Koons bought a version of the photo on a postcard and had it made into three sculptures. The photographer saw one of the sculptures a couple of years later and sued Koons for using his image without permission. The photographer won, was awarded the cost of the sold sculpture, given the other two sculptures, and received a monetary award. Koons' work sells in the six digits so the photographer made out great on an image he sold as a postcard. This is rare.

Well I hope that's a little helpful. Remember blogs and websites can be copyrighted but you have to send in the form and fees. They are available online. Copyright.gov.

Well I want to write a website, nothing else.

And from what I looked into, its automatically protected under copyright.

The idea will change the world, literally. This idea is actually from God... given to me to give to you... to everyone. So I guess it really doesn't matter WHO writes it!

Oh well... I'm going to keep writing and testing... and I'll definitely post the finished website when its done!

Funny story about copyright's, true but funny.


Years ago ( i think 2002ish) a guy got busted with a trunk full of dope and alot of cash on him. He already was a 2 time loser and knew he was getting time. So before he went to court he got a copy right on his name, when the case started he had his atty keep track of how many times the court used his name. He then sued the judge for copyright infringement for using his name without his written consent. The judge didnt find it amusing and the guy got 25 years, but im sure he got a few laughs about it
