Depends on the square footage of your scrog IMO and how much height you have available. I leave just enough room to get under and water, remove dead leaves, etc. If I don't have much height available i'll try and get the screen as close as possible to the top of soil, usually 7-8", just enough to get under and water.
My personal opinion is 7-12" is a good screen to soil distance and should be plenty of room to work under for up to a 3x3 foot sized scrog(i'd go 12" on a 3x3).
I have about 66" of height and I'm growing ak47 xtrm (ak 47x white widow) in 4'x4' areas. Already got a lot suspended from ceiling would prefer if I didn't have to add more. Thanks everyone!
If you ping your SCROG net between vertical poles/bamboo in each corner of the garden then you can nudge the fixing point up or down at will, giving some potentially very handy flexibility compared to any fixed point mount
