Boy Does Homework By The Light Of McDonald's
picture.php

Pictures of a homeless boy doing his homework on the pavement outside a McDonald's, to take advantage of the light at night, have gone viral.

The youngster is seen sitting at a tiny wooden bench writing or drawing in a book as the glow from the restaurant illuminates the space around him.

The photographs, taken in the Philippines city of Cebu, were posted on Facebook by student Joyce Torrefranca.

Ms Torrefranca, a medical student, told Philippine news network ABS-CBN: "For me as a student, it just hit me a lot, like, big time.

"I seldom go to coffee shops to study. And then this kid, he doesn't have anything but he has dedication to study."

The boy was tracked down by the news network who found out his name is Daniel Cabrera.

ABS-CBN discovered the Cabrera family has had no permanent home since their house was destroyed by fire.

Daniel is a grade three student who sets himself up under the lights of the fast food chain branch every night, as it provides the only stable light source near his temporary home.

The youngster told the network that despite his family's current situation, he is determined to finish his studies to be able to help them.

His father is dead and one of his siblings is ill, he told the news organisation.

One of Daniel's teachers said she was impressed by his hard work.

Rosalina Detuya, said: "Daniel is a happy child and also very intelligent. He answers often during class discussions and really gets involved."

The pictures Ms Torrefranca posted have received thousands of shares from around the world.

It was reported, after the photos were widely circulated, that a social welfare officer had visited the Cabrera family to ask what assistance the local government could offer the boy and his mother.

She posted afterwards: "I didn't think that a simple photo can make a huge difference. Thank you guys for sharing the photo.

"With that, we were able to help Daniel in reaching his dreams. I hope Daniel's story will continue touching our hearts so that we will always be inspired and motivated in every situation we face in life."

Update:

Boy Studying Outside McDonald's Gets Scholarship

A homeless boy who was pictured doing his homework by the light from a McDonald's has been inundated with offers of help.

Images of Daniel Cabrera writing and reading at a small bench on the pavement outside the restaurant went viral after they were placed on Facebook.

People who saw the photos have now donated ocash, school supplies and a college scholarship - which he hopes will enable him to fulfil his dream of becoming a police officer.

Daniel's mother, Christina Espinosa, said: "We're overjoyed. I don't know what I will do with all of these blessings.

"Now, Daniel will not have to suffer just to finish his studies."

The photo, taken on an island in central Philippines, was posted on Facebook last month by college student Joyce Torrefranca.

The 20-year-old medical technology student told a local news network: "For me as a student, it just hit me a lot.

"This kid, he doesn't have anything but he has dedication to study."

The ABS-CBN channel tracked down the Cabrera family and found they did not have a permanent home after their house had been gutted by fire.

The grade three student, who has limited access to electric light, sets himself up under the dim glow of the restaurant's bulbs every evening to carry out his studies.

Ms Espinosa told AFP that she and her three youngest children, including Cabrera, had been living in her employer's mini-grocery store in Mandaue, on the island of Cebu, since their slum dwelling was destroyed five years ago.

The 42-year-old earns just 80 pesos (£1.15) a day and is forced to boost her income by selling cigarettes and sweets on the streets outside of work hours to provide for her family.

She said Daniel's father died of severe diarrhoea in 2013 and since then he had been a tenacious child who was determined to get an education.

"He is a very studious and determined boy... he would insist on going to school even without his lunch money because I have no money to give," Ms Espinosa added.

"He always tells me: 'Mama, I don't want to stay poor. I want to reach my dreams'."

As well as cash, school supplies and the scholarship, he has also been provided with school uniforms and a reading lamp.

The local church and government social welfare office have also accepted aid on his behalf.

Mandaue's social welfare office chief said the challenge was now to manage the aid to make sure Daniel achieves his goal.

Violeta Cavada said: "He has become a symbol of poor slum boys in the city who can't study because they don't have electricity."

Ms Torrefranca said she was pleased that taking and posting the photo had helped the youngster.

"I couldn't believe how my post went viral and helped him in his studies," she said.

Good things do still happen :)
