I ran across this white insect on a lower branch.

It "was" about the size of a small seed. It had a cotton feathery look. The right side of the pict shows shows a web of sorts around the stem. It had the same white cotton look. It's demise was swift. The other stuff was removed with an alcohol swab. Actually the bug was pretty cool looking note the tuft mid way down the back. I don't think it had wings & was pretty quick to move around the stem avoiding the attention. I went over every plant in the garden,. It was the only one so no big deal at this time. I hope the pict is clear enough. Best Regards!

Very good pic of the critter. It's definitely a mealy bug. Wish I had a pest that simple to detect and identify!

Looks like the White Thrips.

Thrips are WAY smaller than wooly aphids and mealy bugs. Still kind of hard to tell from that angle but it could either be wooly aphids or mealy bugs. The one things that makes me wonder is that aphids and mealy bugs usually move pretty slow and hang out with a lot of friends.

Good point, Token, This thing was pretty big I could plainly see it. I thought aphids were much smalller The body was not flat like a mealy bug, It was shaped like a shrimp and moved pretty quick. It kept run to the opposite side of the branch . When I got close like a squirrel. I'm 99% sure it was the only one at least at that stage. I'm watching "real "close.

Interisting, I did some searching and found out that it could in fact be a leafhopper, a wooly one at that. The way you described it in its movements and shape certainly suggest that. Ive found some pics of other leafhoppers that have the "wooly" characteristics. The ones that were shown were of a different color but had the same characteristics. this could be so because there are alot of diffrent species of them and the one you have still looks like its in its nymph stage. heres a few of examples.

I thought some sort of leaf hopper right away when he said how quick it moved. Then the pic of the woolly aphid threw me off, especially with that tuff on the top of it's midsection.

Aphids do move slow though...

I can tell you 100% that it's not any type of thrip. Thrips and me go waaaay back!!! :badday:
