Inline Fan

I wanted to try and get some advice on line fans.
I need a fan for a small cabinet (20 ft^3) to run a cool tube with a 250 hps light.

I was planning to get a 4" fan with a cfm rating of 100+

I hear Vortec fans are really quiet, etc...

Below is a link to a cheapo fan i found for $75
Link
Anyone ever heard or bought this before? It's the cheapest thing around that I can find.
I don't want to skimp out if it would really be worth the extra to get a "brand product"

Any thoughts? advice? anyone ever had experience with the fan in the link?

My blowers like the one in the link tend to resonate, kind of a drowned out vibration that just never ends. Not good if you have interested ears nearby. The inline type, vortex, fantech, etc just move air without the humm but teh sound of air moving is just that, sound. At least you can quiet air moving but that resonate humm will run make your whole cabinet resonate. Go inline if you can afford it. You'll never whish for a smaller less cfm fan, trust me.

There's a thread in this section of the forum regarding whisper quiet Panasonic fans you may wanna check out. The inlines are very quiet except for the sound rushing through which can be excessive. This noise is located right at the fan and the longer the exhaust duct the quieter it becomes. I've seen peeps put a loop in the duct to muffle noise but this cuts air flow alot but if your fan is strong no biggie. I used to use Elicent and now go with Vortex as you get more bang for the buck but more flow ='s more noise. I always recommend people get more fan than they think they need as that extra flow sometimes come in handy. That size fan could easily be controlled by a 300 watt solid state speed controller if flow is excessive. I've thought about experimenting with using a 4" to 6" reducer on a 4" fan on the exhaust side, add a small length of 6" duct and insert a piece of sound deadening foam for a cheap muffler.

you really need to read that link, if your looking for quiet i don't think vortec fans are the solution they may be quiet in relation to other fans but once you open the box and plug it in the sound of 300cfm of rushing air is like a small jet engine taking off!

my advice is, if possible try one out first. a lot of people talk about how quiet these things are so i bought one, now maybe their is no motor noise but i wouldn't know because the sound of rushing air was soooo loud i knew it wasn't going to work. so i bought a speed controler, which helped a lot, but rather than paying for a 300cfm fan only to cut it down to 150cfm (for sound purposes) i would rather just buy a quiet 150 fan for half the price.

The Elicent 4"ers are only 150 cfm, Vortex's are 172 cfm but you'll pay more for the Elicent. I have an Elicent 4" and it's pretty darn quiet. The Vortex 6", 447 cfm, does sound like a jet engine taking off...that's EXACTLY how a friend described it...lol...but the intake side of the fan has virtually no duct on it to quiet things down. My expereince is the inlines, like a 4" compared to a 6", are not half price but more like 25% less.

Yo,
Thanks for the advice averyone.
Lol, i definately don't want it to sound like there's a jet in the closet.
I'll probabbly end up with a small 4" with maybe a speed controller if it's too loud.
Thanks & keep it coming if you got it

You'll need the speed controller mate :) running a 5" Systemair inline here and the noise is already getting on my nerves, its just the sound of moving air though.

Sounds like a really noisy powerful pc in my wardrobe, picking up a speed controller asap.

If you get a 4" I'd recommend a 300 watt controller. A larger controller would give you crappy 'fine' adjustment.
