Indoors to outdoors

I transplanted my 4ish month old Hindu Kush mother(4 foot tall in 5 gallon pot w/FFOF soil) outdoors and for the first day everything was fine but on the second day something went wrong. Random fan leaves first get a sploch of brown(looks kind of like a brown bruise, it still has the same feel to it and is not crisp yet) then it spreads to the rest of the leaf and then the whole leaf starts to curl completely and at this point it is crisp to the touch. This is happening rapidly. None of the leaves have fallen off yet, but I think by tomorrow or the next day I'm going to see many dead fan leaves falling off. Some leaves are flipping too, so that the bottom of the leaf is pointed up/sideways. Also, lower parts of the plant that didn't receive very much light seem to be bleaching from the middle outward. This is also happening rapidly. The mother was under weak lights while it was indoor. It was also in a lower temperature by about 10-15 degrees. My previous environment had no circulation... the mother simply sat there. If I were to describe the leaves before I put them outside, I would say that some were soft to the touch... I think that being stuffed inside the environment it was in has a lot to do with this. I would almost say that they simply can't grow outdoors.. but that is ridiculous.

My guess is that the plants are being shocked by the new environment... especially so because my environment before was a weak one compared to the sun, fresh air and nice breeze my plant is getting now. I don't want to post pictures but if no one can find out what is wrong from my description I will.

It sounds like you've light shocked them. Mj likes lots of light, but you have to gradually acclimate them to their new environment. Shade cloths can help or you could just leave them out for an hour or so at a time until they get used to all that extra light.

I would agree with the above post, the shade cloth wil help as your girls are not used to the power of the sun! Your girls are going to drop some leaves as a result, but recovery and new growth should appear in about two weeks.

Ramping up the light source ten billion fold will do that to ya'. I started plant outdoors at noon and under a trellis at that. This way the first day was a half day and shaded as well. I'd maintain the trellis the next day to provide moving shade as the sun poked through the openings. Day three, I'd remove the trellis at noon so it's first day of full Sun was a half day.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate your help! Are the bleached leaves going to heal? The last time I checked on them it spread to most of the lower parts of the plant and it looked severe to me. A few of the leaves were pure white.

Once old growth is cooked, it's cooked. Look to new growth to gauge plants health.
