I'm looking to buy a home in Canada. Any suggestions?

I am ready to start my retirement next summer. I am looking to get a place with a 6-8 acres. Some basic livestock and pets thrown in the mix.

I love the mountains, oceans and lakes in that order but having a river or nice parks close by, would be good.
I love small towns but whatever I choose will still have to be 30 -40 max from a fairly large city.

I would like to your hear your thoughts. Just looking forward to putting my feet up and relaxing.

Can you travel and live here legally, or are you planning on snowbirding it.

Not sure how hard it is to move here perminently.

To put things in perspective.

I bought a 1800 with full basement and 80 ACRES for $190,000 a few years ago.

I live 45minutes outside the city...

1 neighbor and she is friendly (even after just about burning down her barn...stupid brush fires)...

Oh...one thing to mention...I live in the asshole of Canada....Manitoba.

Judging from your criteria....

You pretty much nailed Vancouver Island, in that exact order :D We are made of mountains, surrounded by ocean, with many lakes, rivers and parks.

There is still cheap land to be had, though I doubt it will compete with Manitoba. Price wise. And only price wise.... unless you prefer associating with canola over people. They don't call it rapeseed for nothing.

There's also the Sunshine Coast, and all the islands in between. I think there's something to the east of the Rockies/coastal mountains, the capital of the country if I recall, but no one ever ventures in that direction... the Prairies are all oil and snow, at a balmy -45, then there's central Canada (Ontario), oh what a joy that is (ever wonder why the asshole is centre to the ass? :D).... Quebec comes next, don't even bother stopping to spit on those separatist surrender monkies. After that you come to the East coast, full of the saltiest of the salt of the earth style people, but they all share the same job for one half of the year and fight for the same employment insurance check during the other six monthes.

7-12c/kWh in BC. Rather high for a province that produces the majority of its energy for free. Oh that's right, we subsidize the reduced rate we give the Americans by overcharging our own people...

Bad time to buy a house and property in Canada. Wait. Canada has a massive gas bag of a real estate bubble. Google it. The canadian government, the banks they all know it. Property prices will have to fall at least 50-60 % to even approach affordability. This applies most places but especially to gasbag central Vancouver and Island.

Don't listen to mikell, he is biased/full of hate and resentment.

I never know if you're joking, completely off-base/full of baseless assumptions or just have no sense of humour. Like that time before, when you lost your shit in an epileptic fit from that pair of constrictive vaginapants.

Most of what I write is jest, anyone perceptive can see that.

Back to reality...

Ranger's comments are accurate. Even here on the North Island, the two larger communities and outlying towns experience it. Newer developements/suburbs are hilariously overpriced, dragging up the value of older housing. Where the average/entry level buy-in was below 200k ten years or more ago, it now hovers around 300k. If you head to the sticks, it's not as pronounced, but will still effect the price.

"Canada's Asshole" (Manitoba) sounds appealing

BC/Vancouver island is too expensive

Quebec City would be awesome. Probably expensive though.

We americans get brought up negatively in the most unexpected ways in the most unexpected threads.

I was in Canada once for a fishing trip. I loved Perth and Ottawa and all the people I met.

If you're refering to my comment about sending power south, I meant no offense to any Americans, merely to mock our own idiotic export policies/practices. Our greatest national export is employment, we ship it all around the world to the lowest bidder.

Thats about what i get for my extra solar energy that i sell.
If i should buy power it would cost about 4 times as much.

Oh, I get it now. You're a Frenchy Le Peu :D I don't actually hate the French, but do get a laugh out of separatists (who doesn't?) and how Canada has two languages everywhere except Quebec.
