i'm having problems sprouting, seeds are melting?

i've seen this two or three times and lost a round of beans to it, be on the lookout.

my method: 1. soak beans in a shot glass overnight

2. place on soaked medium with 100% humidity until embryo reaches about .5 inches and plant in soil trying to keep humidity as high as possible.

for some reason the seeds stop growing when moved to soil? after nudging them the seed embryo has turned to jelly and is all melted in the shell? the only thing i can think to do is try to sterilize everything and allow the seedlings more time growing on the paper towels before planting in soil. has anyone else seen this before?

Sounds like things may be too wet, too long.

I once had some Afghani#1 seeds that came from moldy bud. No matter what I did the seeds rotted before they could sprout. I tried a lot of different methods. ISO wash, fungicide pre-treat etc. No go. The only reasonable explanation is that they were infected with something I couldnt conventionally kill before planting.

yes as soon as they have a good tail it's time to plant them in the starter soil, no more dome needed at this point else it will die off. i tend to skip all the fiddling around with shot glasses and trying to plant them when they have a tail. i just put the seed; 1 max 2 seed depths under the surface of whatever medium im using, i.e. rock wool or starter pads for soil. i have the highest success rate like this. i keep the medium wet till the leaves show up then stop keeping it wet and start treating it normally.

Get 'em in the medium much, much sooner...

Good luck...

".5" classy,, lol 5 inch tap root before planting,,

imo just leave it in water until the tap root is out from 1/2 inch to an inch ,, then put it into mildly moist soil,,

once the tap root is out the seedling is hydrated fully so the substrate it goes into doesnt need to be soaking,, once sprouted i dont find seedlings need high moisture,, thats more for clones,, seedlings are tough,,

and fungal spores love extreme humidity,,, so thats why i keep them in water where they are safe from microorganisms and then in normal conditions once in soil,,

Yes I have seen this before. I saw this when ,as other members have stated, when the medium I placed them in was way to moist. You only need to be slightly damp at this point. Never saturated. I hope you get it worked out. Beans are expensive.:tiphat:

Sorry - you may now resume your regular lives...

But I'm nay gunna change it - if it WAS a 5" tail, that WOULD be too long...

Doh...

even an 1" is to long for me. As soon as I see a tail it goes into the soil.. Since the seedling is not taking up any water to speak of you dont need much water. I use beer cups so after the first drenching I dont use anymore until the seed has sprouted. the baby Needs to be kept warm as well while sprouting. After they sprout I just mist them for a week or very small amounts of water.

I'm a big fan of letting the seed get going asap.

- Scarify with sandpaper tube or whatnot
- Soak 12-18hrs NOT until it splits.
- Plant in damp... not soggy medium at 75F, covered.
- As soon as that seedling pops through and drops its hull (on its own!) I slowly peel the cover off... over the next 3-4 hours to acclimate it to the lowered humidity.
- Expose to intense CFL lighting and in days you have a strong, healthy seedling that's just about ready for some water.

Stay Safe! :blowbubbles:

p.s. had some seeds that had gotten above 90F for a while... not exactly sure how hot but they all mushed out... no matter what I did.

i'm pretty sure it's something else judging by< planting two rounds of the same seed, the first round was all good, the second melted.

I usually soak for 18-24 hrs, once though (when this same problem happened) i germed in little caps w/ h2o and left them until the tails where going good. must be too much water, and then w/ the open drier air they get ate up.

But I'm nay gunna change it - if it WAS a 5" tail, that WOULD be too long...
That would not be classy, good looking out.

I have alright luck germinating, these ones that melt for some reason urk me though. Luckily the rate was 11 to 2.

I think we have an answer, be careful with the H2O2, too much will melt the seeds into mush.

Lots of good advice here. Wishing ya the best next go round.

Out of eleven 2 melted out, same scenario for all of them, the tails just weren't digging yet, maybe if I leave a couple of the barely cracked ones in the bag till the tails get going more it'll help.

Search the forums; many of us just plant directly in soil or pucks, keep the medium moist, and let 'em do their thing. Works just fine. Good luck!
