if weed seeds were treated like tomatoes

Well, let's imagine a world where marijuana is not only legal, but is treated like basically tomatoes.

How many breeders would be left when the ridiculous price of the seeds cannot be justified? I guess only those who really feel love for the plant

Let's take the example of vegetable seed companies specializing in heirloom-type cultivars, such as Baker Creek Seeds, which until recently sold their varieties for 3 dollars in bags of 25 seeds, still expensive compared to normal seeds, but accessible to farmers all over the world. world (at least until recently when they started charging 10 dollars for shipping to Mexico and only allowed shipments of 10 seedpacks.

I imagine that they still have a profit margin without charging 50 euros for 10 seeds...

It won't be long friend before all this greed turns around. You and I are doing our part by growing our own. When people start making their own seeds and growing their own weed the seed prices will drop.

it's not quite like that. Any plant species that has been genetically improved has value. I inform you that the tomato seeds market is in the hands of multinationals such as bayer (Monsanto), Syngenta, sakata, clause, etcetc..and if they do it is because there is enormous interest.
and tomato seeds aren't cheap.

Cannabis seeds are between $6 to $30 per seed. Tomatoes seeds are $2.99 for a pack of 60 seeds. Tomato seeds are pretty cheap unless you get the expensive ones for $8.00 a pack. When cannabis is as cheap as tomatoes seed the greed will be over.

I think tomato seeds don't have the same germination rate or survivability as ganja
Maybe I'm mistaken, but from what I've seen people prefer 'clones' of tomato plants ..the seeds need special conditions, farmers don't care or have time to baby tomato seedlings when they can just buy established cuts..
at least in my country
L.E : tho I've seen cherry toms that just died on the vine and sprung up healthy af during spring..

it's too general. different plant species cannot be compared. the planting layouts must be considered. 30,000/40,000 plants per hectare for tomatoes..
the biology of the plant species in question must be considered. genetic improvement may be easier for one plant species and more difficult for another.
and still consider a thousand other factors. they cannot be compared.
tomato seeds are then of many types. what type are you talking about? what variety are we talking about? what resistance do they have? it's still...the final sale price must be considered. 1 kilo of tomato costs differently than 1 kilo of cannabis.
and to compare different species by putting them on the same level is wrong.
trust me that vegetable seeds are not cheap.

however, I agree on the fact that illegality distorts the market and therefore prices.
not really. Tomatoes are cultivated yearly for mass consumption, thc strains are not, at least here . but hemp is =older people around here don't realize what cannabis really is. They just know it's illegal hemp.. try to tell them it's medicine... not happening [sidenote: I told my grandma we should make irrigation ditches (I dont know the english term, so we can water more efficiently, it didn't happen)]
So yeah.. I think tomato seeds don't have the same germination rate, I also think people prefer to buy established cuts, at least in my part of the world
you really can't compare vegetables or fruits with cannabis.

and even if heirloom tomatos are more expensive than GMO ones, not at all compared with cannabis seedbanks seeds...

Sorry, I don't know why this thread was published twice, but I am attaching an answer that I wrote in the other post

I know that the price varies, and there are quite a few Spanish banks selling "pirate" seeds, as some say, from 3 euros per seed, growbarato type, even so, it is still more expensive than most seeds of any other vegetable.

My question is: whether demand or illegality generates those prices, in a utopian scenario, where marijuana is really legal, and no more regulated than any other plant in our garden, how many breeders do you think are still at it?

I am thinking of the legendary breeder from the Canary Islands, Alex La Mano Negra, a friend of Dubi and Kaiki, who from what I have read always opposed his varieties being marketed by banks, and simply shared them with the community, and even Thus, after his death, several crosses have been released to the Spanish market.

I also think of the debate on the intellectual rights of seeds and how here in Mexico there has been a whole movement to maintain landrace corn varieties as collective property, in the face of the attempts of large transnational companies to literally disappear it...
