If height is NOT a problem...

...is there any point to using LST methods such as the tie down one? I was planning on using that method, but I am growing in a 4x4 sunhut which is around 7' high and I have plenty of space in there. So would it still be advantageous to do the tie down method or should I let them just go wild? Thanks all!

I think the only consideration is if the light can penetrate fully to lower branches and buds shaded by upper leaves.
Or spreading cola development around.
Left alone, depending on strain, you may get one big cola and little minor colas. LST would allow the minor colas to keep up with the "top" cola, which I think doesn't get quite as big as it would left to its own devices.

Other than that, let em get wild.

Presto D is right, training methods are not for keeping the plants under a certain height, they're for getting a higher yield out of each plant by increasing it's ability to absorb light. You could grow plants tall in your tent, but unless you provide side lighting, the bottoms will be poorly lit and, unless you 'lollypop' heavily, will be covered with small buds which will suck energy from the top.

This is what happened when I let 5 or 6 go in my 4x4x7 Growlabs GL120. I agree with the previous comments, I will be trying new methods after this run is complete. Don't mind the lights off pic...

Oh ok, thanks a lot for clearing that up for me everyone.

Think Green - what method do you plan on doing on your next grow? I would like to scrog, but since I'm going from seed I was told not to do that since getting the males out would be a pain in the ass. Would tie down be a good one to try all things considered?

Lst and scrog both work on the same principal. The main thing to remember is to keep your canopy level. The tallest part of the plant will produce a hormone like substance known as auxins. the auxins settle to the lower part of the plant and restrict growth. The lower on the plant you go the higher the auxin levels. That is why you want to keep your canopy level. You want as many buds as you can get on the top of the canopy so that they will grow at he same rate. The tallest bud will always be the largest bud, even if it comes from the bottom branch of the plant.

Certainly agree about the light penetration aspect. If you want to grow trees you will probably need to have vertically hung bulbs as well as the one overhead.

To improve light penetration you can

  • flower early, minimal veg time

  • Training, SOG, SCROG, LST or supercrop
I prefer SOG.
