ideal cloning temp for soil?

hey icmag'ers

i've started some cuts in a commercial seed-starting soil with added perlite.

the cuts are in humidity domes which sit atop a warm heating pad..............my question is...................how warm is too warm???

anyone??

if it is something other than an actual seedling heating mat be careful.....
you might wind up drying out the soil.....

have you started cuts before in this mixture of seed-starting soil + perlite??
i'm trying to get a sense for how familiar you are with the rate at which this medium tends to dry out.....

so i guess the answer is that it is too warm when the rooting medium dries out....

hope this helps....

-kind regards from gp

I am thinking the mid 70s F it should be good and as stated by GP watch that you do not dry your soil out too much with the heating pad. Peace and be safe and nice to see ya Dequilo

85 f is too warm imo...touch the wet soil with the back of your finger if it feels more than warm then this is too warm..this is the rule i have alwayss used..i have a 12 watt heat mat and it does the job just fine as long as the surrounding temps of the dome are not too warm..if it is too warm then put something between the heatmat and the cuts to absorb some of the heat....peace

i like mine at 80 f . if your using a regular heating pad,put the dome up on a couple of paperbacks next to a radiator, and put the heating pad on the floor underneath it. by having a space between the pad and the dome you'll allow heated air to rise up around the dome instead of the pad cooking the bottom of the tray.

I also like mine right at 80-85 degrees in the dome,I use rw cubes though not soil.80 degrees seems to be perfect for cloning or germinating seeds

thanx for the kind replies.............i may have to lower the temps a bit as the consensus seems to feel mid to upper 80's may be a tad bit too high

since beans germ quicker when 'warmish' it would seem logical that the 80's would be okay

we will see..........
