Ice-tube cloner from WallyWorld

morning bro, ...do you remember my recommending a dome for the first couple of days back in Sept.?

Peace, SOG

High BR, hope all is well will you and yours bro and congrats on getting the medical recommendation, now the struggle will be to stay within rediculous limits, lol.

...anyway, as you know I have been a fan of these ice-tube-trays for a couple of years now and I will always return to them if I need lots of clones or if I ever have trouble cloning in the future.

...the thing is though that, like you, I am now growing in coco, coco hempy-buckets to be exact, and so I figured cloning in straight coco would simplify things.

With that end in mind I took cuts from 16 un-needed clones rooted in soil, basically I just chopped them down.

...so, what I did was fill 16 of my 'clear' 9oz solo cups with moist coco and just stuffed a couple in with no rooting hormone at all, then I stuffed a couple dipped in cheap Greenlight rooting powder an the rest I used a homemade rooting 'gel' made from that same cheap rooting powder mixed into about a tsp of honey.

That first run I got a 75% strike rate and all but 1 were from the group with my homemade 'gel' so thats what i'm using now. (btw that was after 14 days)

Anyhow, the second run of just 8 cuts were all dipped in my gel and stuffed into the coco and this time I used a humidity dome for the first day only and this time I had 75% rooted within 10 days I think with the last 2 showing roots by the 12th day so this time I got 100%.

The third run of 8 cuts (my shoe-box bins hold 8x 9oz perfectly) were also dipped in my gel and stuffed them into the coco-filled cups and this time I used a humidity dome for the first 2 days only (be careful to remove the dome in stages to harden them off or the will wilt on you big time).

Anyway, that third run I had 1 showing roots in just 4 days and by day 6 I had 7 of 8 rooted with the last showing roots by day 10, so 100% again!

Thing is that there is a learning curve with coco to with the keys still being temps and moisture level, with coco you have to keep it moist without allowing it to be too wet.

So don't give up my friend, I promise, with your skills, you'll nail it down in no time.

Peace, and be safe, SOG

In my case I just dont want to deal with a humidity dome......

I want my grow to manage a week at a time on its own......

Im perfectly happy using the ice tube tray for a week.......

I dont need a dome.....

In my case doing without the dome is more important to sticking with only coco......

I do appreciate all your comments....

But the circumstances are different...

Back in september I was mucking with using coco....

Now Im looking a taking much larger clones than I had ever taken before....

Because they are large they wilt....

Just part of the equation....

They benefit of the larger clones outweighs the bother of a dome....

but I still dont do much but remove it after 2 days....

I can live with that.....

Burnt , how big are the clones your talkin about ? i've been taking larger clones myself & putting them in the cloner with no wilt at all .
never mind ... i found it in post 733 & 734 :)

here you can see how much bigger than i usually take them .

the clones in the middle tray are actually branches that i cut down to fit in the cloner without hitting the light or they'd probably be taller :)

Has anybody tried to reuse the vermiculite from the cloner or do ya all just throw it away ? i have a 2 gallon bucket full of used vermic from the cloners :)
mostly from unused plugs , never used any cloning gel or anything ... just tap water & occasionally some peroxide .

Dansbuds... My policy is that only new vermiculite is used for the clones....

However thats probably due at least as much to being superstitious as much as having some scientific basis....

I can guarantee you one thing.... if you continue taking larger and larger clones....

eventually you find they will wilt....

Ive been playing with clones as large as 12 inches above the soil....

However Ive settled in to 6-8 inch clones for reasons not due to the successful rooting of the clones....

Larger clones are the way to go....

With those larger cuttings I have taken to putting the cloner in a plastic bag for 48 hours....

after they are removed they have not wilted at all.... even though they wilted as they were being introduced to the cloner.....

Recently I changed my grow room around and my cloning area was effected negatively....

My old setup used 2 shelves with floros and my cloner was on the upper shelf.....and the lower shelf and lights provided warmth....

I reduced to one shelf so Im not getting my bottom heat anymore.... I had to allow extra time for rooting...

I had tried one of those seed tray heat mats and couldnt get it up to like 82-83 degrees....

I was in the big city yesterday and picked up what I think is the perfect source to provide bottom hear for your clones....

Its called repti-therm....

I put it next to a chilly window and put a thermometer on the mat.... the one I bought is about 5 inches square.... about 25 bucks.... a little pricey.... at petsmart.....

It reads about 90 degrees....

I also cut down ice tray to fit....it has 18 rather than the 27 tubes originally.....

Im expecting that I can put my cloner right on the thing....

Once I do a couple cycles with it....Ill report back.....

90 degrees would in fact be too warm....

however the mat is about 2 inches worth of vermiculite away....

Gut feeling this should work quite well....

IM with my friend sog....

You can try to clone the plant.....

if that doesnt work.....plan to reveg the plant.....

If you like it that much.....

I would recommend picking most of the flowering material.... but leaving quite a few large leaves....

when the plant begins to produce normal 3 fingered leaves cut out as much of the older growth as possible....

once the leaves hit 5 fingers.... take some clones.....

once they root you can either reflower....or discard the mom.....

This is my first time cloning and i must say this is as simple as it gets. I had a 100% success rate using HTG cloning powder. 4 23 watt 6500k CFl bulbs. I was worried because i took my clones from a plant that was in flower. No worries no problems. Only success. Thanks for the idea. To remove plugs i used two double A batteries and pushed from the bottom. No root damage.

mornin' man, if you want to get fancy you can drill a small hole in a penny and screw it to a piece of dowel to make a ramrod that fit's like a glove.

I have been working on setting up a perpetual micro SOG for about a year. Taking my time, getting things to work. The one thing I just could not get to work was cloning with any sort of consistent results. I was getting maybe 10% success using various methods. My main problem seemed always to be stem rot. Then I found this thread. I went to REI and got the ice tube tray (I cut it into 3 separate trays with 9 tubes each). I went to Lowes and got some of the Sta-Green fine grade vermiculite. I cut some clones, I set things up as described in this thread. I just pulled the clones out tonight after 10 days. And I had 100% success. I'm not talking about a couple of roots on each clone, but really nice cluster of roots on each clone. I really want to thank everyone who contributed to this thread. My perpetual micro SOG is born today!!!
Happy farming! Stay safe. Peace y'all.

You will find that if you get the environment right..... cloning is quite easy.....

Just a couple areas to make sure you are going the right way...

Temps over 80 degrees....

make sure the vermiculite is packed tight into the tubes.... its a better wick than if its loose.... Its the same reason fine vermiculite is used.... less airspace.... better wicking....

Im glad you found a method that works for you.....

I got mine at a local REI store, REI also has them online to order. Just google "ice tube tray", lots of places online to get them.
