IC Mag, usernames and seach engines

R

RNDZL

OK, I know im new (nick) but lets put that aside to discuss a serious concern.

Lets post a hypothetical scenerio

I am a grower and an IC Mag user.

I grow and breed medicinal quality marijuana

I share photos of my grow and anonymous information incuding unique strain name which I also use in real life

Person in real life googles strain name and finds only reference here and uses it to try to reverse engineer growers identity and location

PERHAPS

is there a way to keep user posts, pictures and other info from returning results in a search engine?

Is there a way to keep user information blocked from searches in the IC Mag search feature?

or is it best to obfuscate by starting over with a new NIC and new naming convention ??

I don't understand the point of a non-searchable data base. If you don't want to be associated with your posts, don't post.

change the name you use for the strain on the internet to something different than what you use in real life perhaps

you can control who has access to your picutres and other parts of your profile

why should it be different with other content?

icmag will continue to let search engines find them.
their business is to sell seeds, so they want new customers to find them.

do yourself a favor, dont put ANY info that could link u in real life on your acct here.

even if icmag blocks those searches... google also can do this.

Better not to share personal info's and things that can help people tell who you are.

you create super cool awesome strain, friends smoke said strain and get blown, decide to google it for some odd reason, and the only reference to that strain is from lordbudly! lets check it out, woah killer 20kw grow system, then they say oh so and so is lordbudly with a 20kw grow going on(dramatization of course)

Why would it matter as long as no one that knows you personally knows that you grow?

Unless they do know you grow.

At that point you cant really expect a website to patch your security boat when youre still shooting holes into it.

Imo the only people that seem to really care about a strain name are growers. Users mostly are just focused on if its good weed or regular weed. Mentioning strain names to others than growers is more or less a waste of time and as you have found out a potential security risk.

OK, so YOUR FRIENDS know you're growing a strain, you turn them on to it and then they figure out...GOSH! You're growing that strain... Gee that's a real security issue, isn't it? Come on, that has nothing to do with this site.

If you can't trust your friends, don't turn them on...

I hardly call that "reverse engineering".

I've grown some super great strains, but the wife still refuses.
What's the secret lordbudly ?

vonforne

I found out that years ago. That is why my name at other sites has been shortened to Von. I get like 300,000 hits with it and none of the point to a grow site. But this name does. We as internet users should know this prior to choosing a name. Live and learn. Just watch what you include in your pictures and you will be fine.

To answer the OP's question:
is it best to obfuscate by starting over with a new NIC and new naming convention ??
Yes. As the previous poster said, it's all about the name you choose on each website you visit. It has NOTHING to do with the websites you visit. It's all about how smart you are regarding your Internet use.

90% of the time a person asks to delete an account it's because they've used the same damn name on every website they go to.

How smart is that? I bet they use the same password too...

And it's not the website's responsibility to then make everything "OK" for the person. It's usually too late to have much effect after the fact.
