i was at a yard sale and found a old fish tank stand the measurements are 5' long 1' 6" deep and 28" tall when it stands normally i was thinking i would stand it on its side i still have to paint the inside white and running 9 cfl's for the lighting does any one have any tips besides better lighting im on a really tight budget so better lights are not affordable for me at this point in time

Honestly? CFLs are cheap-ER but they still aren't crazy cheap. I picked up 8 42w CFLs for my grow and they were still $9 a pop.

You dropped a pretty small fishing rig into a giant ocean, my friend. What tips are you looking for exactly? Rattle off some questions and I'm sure there's some pople on here that would be glad to help you.

Just a word of advice though, make a post in the introduction section and tell us about yourself. I made the mistake of making my first post in this section too without any introduction and I'll be honest, I was pretty much ignored.

Hit the boards a little bit, do some digging, make some posts, give some props, and don't stop reading. I promise you, you can find tons of ideas on how to set up this aquarium stand of yours if you do a little work.

Good luck man!

If stood up on it's side the measurements would be 18" w x 28" d or 3.5 square feet.

general rule of thumb is a minimum of 50w per square foot and 7k-10k lumens per square foot.I'd look into using 150w of light(s).On average that I see CFL's have anywhere from 1200-1600 lumens each (unless you're talking the big cfl's they sell in hydro shops).I'd look into using this one is a 65w CFL with 3900 lumens and I'de purchase 6 of them or purchase 10+ lower wattage lower lumen CFL bulbs.

Have you thought about ventilation, cutting a hole in glass isn't easy,if it's plexi glass that's a different story.
