Green Tea Extract (minimum 50% caffeine) is my go to for caffeine
Purebulk.com has 50% caffeine (minimum content) extract for less than $20 for a half pound. Caution: the 50% EGCG is not the same and can possibly cause liver/kidney damage after a few months.
After using gte for about a year now, I really don't like how coffee makes my body feel. Especially if I drink more than 20oz in a day. The advantages I've come to see in gte are:
No jitters
No crash
Quick Prep
Inexpensive
No headaches
If you're looking for caffeine, gte is a great non-synthesized source for it. Caffeine in sodas, energy drinks, pills and so on are (unless they say otherwise) made from synthetic caffeine. Synthetic caffeine pumps you up fast and drops you back down just as fast.
Gte takes a bit longer to process, comes with additional antioxidants, and instead of a crash gives a slow transition to a non-stimulated state. I have not experienced any headaches from consuming too much. I have used it regularly for months, in high volumes at times, and not experienced any headaches when I go without it. I feel significantly better than how I've felt doing the same with synthetic caffeine. Granted, I've only used synthetic caffeine for a month or so, a few times in the past. I've now been using gte for over a year and I'm very happy about continuing to use it.
The downsides?
It's bitter. lol I mix it with various things, mostly honey and vitamin-c. It mildly affected my digestion at first, though in a way preferable to what coffee does to it. Using a powder which is (at least) 50% caffeine is dangerous.
So, I love a cup of really good coffee and a splash of real soymilk. I just don't see coffee as a stimulant source any longer.
