well I joined about 3 weeks ago but just got my cards in the mail today. The true reason I joined AARP was to enroll in their motor club program. This program takes care of towing up to 100 miles, tire changes (VERY important to me), emergency gas assistance, and up to $1,500.00 trip interruption insurance paying for the tow, hotel, meals & a rental car if my trip is interrupted with a breakdown, this includes my Class A motorhome for an extra fee of course.

I know from my travels across the USA that when checking into a good hotel they ask for club affiliations (AARP or AAA), they do this to discount your stay, sometimes as much as 15% on rooms. use it just 4 times in a yr and pay for your membership. Discounts @ Denny's restaurants too which are all along our interstate system.

I broke down 30 miles from home & wanted my car towed back instead of being dropped locally there, I live in rural northern MN where tow rates are cheaper than most places & I was getting quotes of $200-250. I finally got my local guy to drive south 30 miles & tow me home to our neighborhood for $140. So if you use the tow service even once you've equaled maybe 4 or 5 yrs worth of member dues.

hehehe AARP just teasing,Crap I'm old enough myself but we have the Premium AAA package over 20 years and couldn't be happier, it has saved our A$$ many a times especially the towing it really helps getting towed where YOU want your car to go.

My wife and I are old enough to join but I doubt we will....she is in deep denial that she is getting old. Me, it don't bother me one bit.

Nahh, I just have AAA - for the towing and the reasonable insurance rate for car plus bike. They have beaten all the places that say they have lower premiums.

Hell, I already let my membership lapse... but I'm planning to re-up soon (to help fill my new PO box with "normal" mail, and while I'm at it, they offer lots of good discounts on stuff and that Motoring Plan is high on my list too!). In this youth-oriented culture, I find some comfort in reading their articles... ***It's not all ads for nursing homes and Depends!!!*** It's about stuff that is relevant to me now (in my 50's) or may be relevant in the near future. The way I look at it, if you're just now old enuf to join, you become one of the youngest members of the group...I used to really enjoy being the young one. So why not?

in the days when my back was good I'd never consider waiting for someone to come swap out a flat tire for me, but now on my bad days I can't get off the floor from a kneeling position when I clean out the dogs kennel or need something buried on a bottom shelf. so I figured how would I change a flat on my Explorer when the spare is located under the truck itself.

I just can't do w/out it anymore and have felt much more comfortable knowing my ass is covered if I find myself broken down.

Ha I have not joined but I have gotten the invitations. I had a black birthday recently.

I have also started getting senior singles dating site invitations as well. I think my ex wife has been having some fun with my email address.

The thing is, I don't know exactly where she lives. She is like a phantom that just does a shit and run on me. What a nut case. She make's it her job to know every detail about me but I don't know a single thing about her.

That is some funny shit. I seen an episode of the Sapranos where Pauli takes his mom and her nursing home friends to lunch. They all scrutinize the bill and then you see all these hands go for everything that wasn't nailed down. Kind of a funny scene and I flashed back to it reading your post.

if you do any road traveling it will pay for itself the first time you use it @ a hotel that discounts for you. I paid $16 also but then a bit more adding my car & motorcoach into the road assistance program.

Just for the motels alone it pays for itself in only 4 nights ...often times you just have to mention it , they don't require a card often times .

A friend had closed down his import biz & moved into an upscale motel with kitchenette , so far has been saving $250/mo after i told him to check out aarp. He had the card on him but forgot ...happy camper now & buys me dinner all the time ;)

AARP is nothing more than a shill for insurance companies. I used to be a member but they can have it. They are not always working in the interests of their members its a money maker for them.

Was a member for years. Right up until we figured out they were only about the $$$. Then we just let the membership laspe. What a flood of mail for about 6 months trying to get us to sign on again.

aarp is so fucked up a lot of people I know work at their call center..

they are always sending out duplicate memberships to people you would not believe how many 80 year old people have another 20 years on their membership because they keep renewing it every time and they don't have to.
if you call for their health plan it is their policy to ask for you to renew your membership every time you call, even if it's still valid through 2020.
and its frustratingly difficult to get off of their mailing list if you don't want all of their junk
