OK, Every one of us have a definition of ourselves right. I mean we have at this point in our lives defined ourselves some how. We know what we like and what we dont like. We have an understanding of what we believe. We know who and what we like. What foods we appreciate and for all in fun purposes what our favorite position is.

The point I am trying to make here is that All these things we like, dislike, want, believe, think, and or have opinions on is who we are right. This is what defines us as us. It's what makes me me and you you. OK hope your still with me here. So in a sense we can say that our ego is us.
I can remember a saying that said wherever I go Ego. This saying might have something to say for the truth..

I was sitting back smokin a bowl of GDP when Istarted to think about why it is that from time to time the emotions of anger fear, hurt, loss, jealousy, revenge, depair, stress, anxiety, depression etc.. enter into my life. I mean at one point or another we have all felt this way right?? Ok cool. So I started to think about this and decided personally that it was EGO. Fact of the matter is why we all feel these negative emotions is that I, as I define myself is being tested and my EGO is in question. ...Do some examples yourself It is really surprising as to how we define ourselves with our thoughts, opinions ,likes, and dislikes, it is even more intersting to see the emotions that arise when these Beliefs are challenged.

Now alot of us have already made this connection and are able to live in an undefined state and dont allow the Ego's of others or ouselves to affect them. These people live in a state of Harmony never having to fear that which we define as I. I say that which fear I, because it is our definition of ourselves that hurts us.
If we live in I as it really is we dont get hung up on negative feelings only positive ones...I mean for me I can remember about 20 times very clearly that I was in the state of I as is undefined and it was bliss.

Think about it I am sure you guys can relate.....NO Ok You will now, You were standing or sitting or laying somewhere at some time and you were looking at some thing or some one or some place. MAybe out in the woods or while loking at a sunset, or watching an animal etc.... You felt it a calm, a warm feeling a connection to your surroundings a sense of bliss almost.. In that moment you feel as if noone can hurt you or for that matter hurt themselves you feel completely at peace and worry free..
This is what I think it would be like if we could all live in the state of I as is undefined. We would be free to be, and free to exist and live in complete peace free from negative emotion, and EGO.....No War, No Crime, No Hunger, No Hurt, No Suffering, No injustice, No Racism, only Love, Peace, Harmony, Balance and fucking joy that never ends.
There would also be alot more people that enjoyed the benefits of Marijuana as they would finally let down there EGO for a minute and realize that society cannot define them and that a plant that grows on every continent with so many medical mental, physical, and spiritual benefits should be shared freely, and that if some one shared it freely with eacother they would not be a loser or a degenerate or a hippy or a reeefer head.....

Alot of people freed from this belief of I that Marijuana is illegal and is bad would pick up a doobie and wonder why they havent sooner enjoyed a good stone. That person would be undefined and be Just a person on this planet that chooses to smoke or not. If that person smoked they would be greatful for such a plant, and if they didnt they would appreciate the ones who did and honor them as individuals and the plant for it's strength.

I and the problems it creates......Dont be makin fun of me now for my little stoned spiritual babble..

its true. i tried to make it out. some good points forsure. i feel what your saying. but id love to see a little more organization

Yup ego causes suffering. Ego causes difference. No ego = land of robots who all act the same. I used to think I wanted my ego gone, wanted everyone to be the same and get along...well last time I got a sneak peak of what that would be like, it was just creepy and felt fake fake fake fake fake. Things are the way they are, and thats how they will stay. Thats just how I feel today though. Tomorrow I may entertain the notion of a "perfect" blissed out world once again, but I won't hold my breathe(even though that can be interesting). In reality everything is very simple. Too simple for me, I guess I like the complication of this illusionary world. The more complex something is, the more real it feels to me, this too I know is just an illusion, but I like it. I've seen the simple truth and despite how great it feels to be in its light, it feels fake and I tend to let go and run back to the complexity.

Ego equals survival. The worse conditions you live in, the more essential it is. Go into a fight with "no ego" and you're most likely not gonna win.

Ok, wow, I can't read that, it's like looking at a block of words without organization. And believe me, I tried to read it. Please edit in some paragraphs and any necessary punctuation.....

Took me 5 minutes to get it readable...please take the time to do this yourself next time man. You don't have to be an english major to press 'enter' a few times and use a few full stops.

I never bought into Freudian theories about the Ego. After all, it's hard to take someone serious that 'coked' up and wrote generalized theories, evaluating themselves. - Thanks Sigmund for helping push forward psychology, but damned dude - you were obviously stoned when you wrote your theories.

However, he did have a point about the ego. Dealing with it, I may be a bit bias, however I like how the Buddhists look at it:

(Note: I am not trying to convert anyone or discredit anyone's beliefs. This is only presented as part of the thread's conversation and as food for deeper thought.)

What is the Noble Truth of Suffering? Birth is suffering, aging is suffering, sickness is suffering, dissociation from the loved is suffering, not to get what one wants is suffering: in short the five categories affected by clinging are suffering.

What is the Noble Truth of the Origin of Suffering?
It is craving which renews being and is accompanied by relish and lust, relishing this and that: in other words, craving for sensual desires, craving for being, craving for non-being. But whereon does this craving arise and flourish? Wherever there is what seems lovable and gratifying, thereon it arises and flourishes.

What is the Noble Truth of the Cessation of Suffering? It is the remainderless fading and cessation of that same craving; the rejecting, relinquishing, leaving and renouncing of it. But whereon is this craving abandoned and made to cease? Wherever there is what seems lovable and gratifying, thereon it is abandoned and made to cease.

( I took those directly from http://www.buddhanet.net/4noble.htm )

I won't go into the FOURTH NOBLE TRUTH, as then we're going into a religious / philisophical argument as to how to end this suffering. Buddhists have their Eightfold path, Christians have the teachings of Christ to help them through this, and Muslims follow the teachings of Mohammad to deal with their sufferings. - We'll just avoid all of that and keep with the generalized discussion of the ego and it's suffering.

The ego causes suffering. We desire, want, and crave. In all forms - even for the seemingly simple answers as to why we do this - causes even more suffering of our egos. There isn't anything worse than a stoner contemplating the meaning of life - except, after another bonghit, begins to contemplate the meaning of meaning.

It's really too hard to accept the answer: "Because it's just that way." Ha, that answer isn't for the stoner. We get baked and become super altruistic and feel for the poor grass we denied the freedom to grow. Does it hurt it when we cut it? Or is it rejoicing that it's cut and can grow again? How many have got droolingly baked and sat there staring at a blue TV screen and concluded that "Blue" is an emotion. Hehehe, dude, set the bong down and take three steps back.

But taking the stoner jokes aside. The ego is a powerful thing. It's our conscience and self-awareness. I am me - why am I me? Why is me here and what the hell does me want? I love, but love causes me pain. I don't want pain, so I stress from the pain. But that causes me more suffering and need for more love. Ack, ego - stop it, it's an endless cycle with no answers and no standards.

What I desired yesterday is overwhelmed away into a new desire I have now. But that first desire wasn't satisfied and now I am desiring something else that won't be satisfied either. What will make me happy and wanting to be happy causes me to suffer in it's quest. I can't be satisfied - ever. The moment I am content, I desire something else - food, drink, another bonghit, sex, or I simply gotta pee.

I guess I should rejoice in the fact: I get to suffer, for I am here to suffer (Cogito, ergo sum (I think, therefore I am)). And that should be good enough. But my cognition disallows me to relax, as I contemplate everything and demand a reason for it.

I guess it's just better to enjoy the ride.
