I don't care what your neighbors think and I certainly don't care what the police think.

I only care that you and your children continue to......think.

This is serious shit and I am a little surprised at the lack of discussion on this topic.

The confused sentences in this first article are due to the person that formatted those pages, not me, sorry.

POT GROWERS LURE HOME INVADERS

Medical Marijuana Sites, Especially, Become Targets For Gunmen Seeking Cash

One October evening, just five months after buying a $400,000 home on a sleepy block in one of the better neighborhoods in Portland, a couple had some visitors.

Two men, one brandishing a gun, forced their way in the front door, used duct tape to tie up the couple and a friend. One of the men claimed he was looking for the dealer who hooked his sister on drugs.

Eventually, the men left the house, in the 4600 block of Southeast Madison Street, when the residents convinced them they had the wrong address.

On Dec. 5, their horrifying ordeal was demystified when Portland police officers searched the next-door neighbor's house, finding a sophisticated grow operation and 352 marijuana plants.

A medical-marijuana cardholder, Timothy Surprenant, 35, was arrested, cited and released a few hours later -- having told them that the grow was for "personal use."

Police, however, suspect Surprenant's crop and cash were the real targets of the home invasion.

Athough exact figures are impossible to come by, police say the number of home invasions reported in Portland are on the rise, and are increasingly related to marijuana -- especially medical marijuana.

In contrast to the middlin' weed of baby boomers' glory days, modern strains of marijuana are highly potent and go for $300 an ounce, turning patients and growers into targets.

While home invasions of drug dealers are not a new phenomenon, Sgt. Pat Walsh argues that the state's medical marijuana law has "absolutely" made Portland a more target-rich environment by adding thousands of medical marijuana cardholders in Multnomah County alone.

A gunfight between a grower and a home invader in Portland is "just a matter of time," he says. "And I think that when that day comes, people will ( fault ) the police."

Several recent incidents Medical marijuana advocates also say such invasions are not uncommon. But they say the lesson is not that the medical marijuana law is bad -- it's that the criminal marijuana laws are.

"I think the solution is to end adult marijuana prohibition," says Paul Stanford of the Hemp and Cannabis Foundation, which operates a chain of medical marijuana clinics in Oregon and other western states.

Police and growers say the home invaders hear about the marijuana grows through word of mouth from patients, or just by smelling the operation from outside the home.

There have been two other such crimes reported in just the past two weeks in Portland. Last week police responding to a disturbance call at a house in the 5200 block of Northeast 27th Avenue found traces of a marijuana grow, suggesting another home invasion. The case remains under investigation.

A few days before that, on Dec. 8, in what police believe to have been another medical marijuana-related home invasion, three men with guns forced their way into a home in the 2500 block of Southeast 168th Avenue, sticking guns into the face of a 16-year-old girl and pistol-whipping her 33-year-old stepfather.

In Portland, a couple of home invasions are reported each month, and "more often than not" a medical marijuana cardholder is involved, Sgt. Dave Hendrie says.

Police can do little to stop these crimes. That's because so few are reported, and fewer still involve people willing to testify.

Invasions often unreported Moreover, the gunplay that Walsh predicts for Portland already has happened elsewhere -- with nonmedical growers.

In Clackamas County on Oct. 4, two members of a group of would-be home invaders were shot by marijuana growers in the 14500 block of Southeast 162nd Avenue.

Earlier, in 2001, a local drug dealer seeking a plea deal, Humberto Castro Soler Jr., told police that he had led a group that dressed in FBI baseball caps and coplike garb while raiding a series of dealers and pot growers.

Eventually, a raid in Clackamas County led to a gunfight and one of the intruders being killed. None of the raids were reported.

Medical marijuana growers similarly are "afraid to call the police," says Paul Loney, a longtime local medical marijuana advocate.

One reason is they risk having plants confiscated.

In August, police pulled over three men in a car in Southwest Portland who were believed to be casing a house. The men admitted that they were headed out to a marijuana grow; they carried a real-looking BB pistol and gloves.

"Where there's a lot of dope, there's a lot of cash," said one of them, 27-year-old Nathan Baxter, according to a police report. He added that the group felt the robbery could score 18 to 20 pounds of marijuana, each one worth $2,200.

Police figured out who was targeted, and upon inspecting his home, hauled off plants they said he had no right to own; the grower said his cardholders' paperwork was just delayed.

"The irony is ( the police ) said they were protecting me from getting ripped off -- even as they took 21 of my plants," the grower told the Portland Tribune, on condition of anonymity. He added that he suspects a former medical marijuana patient tipped off the would-be robbers.

To prevent a recurrence, he says he has purchased a sophisticated surveillance system, motion detectors and burglar alarm -- to go with the semiautomatic pistol he already owned.

Other growers use shotguns and dogs, while running their ventilation through cat litter to prevent passers-by from detecting their grows.

Ideas may go to ballot Home invasions are likely to be part of the case made by Republican former lawmaker and possible attorney general candidate Kevin Mannix in an initiative for which he is gathering signatures.

It would substitute marinol tablets, containing the active ingredient in marijuana -- for the leafy, home-grown stuff currently used in the program.

Mannix contends that it would curb abuses and unintended consequences of the program.

But medical marijuana advocates say Mannix's initiative would make medicine much more expensive for needy patients. They are floating an initiative of their own, which would create a series of approved farms and dispensaries, thus decreasing the number of grow operations.

Both could reach voters on the November ballot, giving voters a choice of which way to go.

Walsh says he thinks people should be aware of the risks they face when they pick up a card and grow their own. And their neighbors should know that while the growers next door may seem like nice, hippie gardeners, many of them are packing heat.

"They know they need to defend their crops," he says.

What you can do about it?

If you can afford a family trip to Disneyland or Disney World or grandma's house for Christmas you can afford a little protection for your family in your home upon their return and while residing there.

You can not defend yourself or your family if you can't see what is coming at you that you need to defend against. You'll also have irrefutable evidence to start taking these ****ers down if you don't shoot them yourselves....which is what I would advocate....In these United States you have the Constitutional right to defend home and hearth....no matter what the warm and fuzzy people tell you.

These are but some of the features available with this system. You could actually see your home in Oregon from you hotel suite in Florida via any computer terminal and even your smartphone/pda.

http://www.ezwatchstore.com/shop/4-Security-Cameras-p-1-c-325.html

I have researched this subject for quite some time and imo this is without a doubt the best start up system I have found. The smaller systems are not expandable whereas this system is expandable to 16 cameras...all you need is the additional DVR card and the cameras.

The EZKIT4/4-BU is a 4 channel business grade surveillance kit which installs into your own PC turning it into a digital video recorder. This system includes 2 high resolution indoor/outdoor IR night vision bullet cameras and 2 high resolution indoor dome cameras. The 4 security camera kit includes everything you need to have your surveillance system up and running in your home or business quickly and easily. At a resolution of 640x480 you will see excellent detail from the high resolution cameras included with this kit. With all 4 security cameras connected to the system you can view and record at a rate of 7.5 frames per second (FPS). The system can also record 1 channel of audio by connecting the optional microphone to the audio input. All of our security kits include a 1 year warranty on all equipment and lifetime free technical support, so you will never been left in the dark with your system.

Remote Viewing
One of the most popular features of our EZWatch Pro system is the ability to remotely view live and recorded video from any high speed internet connection or 3rd generation cellular telephone. Our built in web server ensures that you can connect from any system with Internet Explorer, avoiding the need to install additional software to view your surveillance system. We also include a client software package that allows multiple, simultaneous connections. This enables you to monitor multiple surveillance sites at the same time from one location.

Expandable
The surveillance system is easily expandable; you can add up to 3 additional DVR cards to the system at any time, bringing your surveillance system up to 16 security cameras. No additional software is needed for expansions; it’s as simple as installing the additional DVR cards into your computer and booting up. You can also easily add Pan/Tilt/Zoom (PTZ) camera control hardware and Pan/Tilt/Zoom cameras to your surveillance system.

Easy & Flexible Operation
Our EZWatch Pro system supports a variety of recording modes, alarms, notifications and schedules. Motion detected recording is easily accomplished; allowing you to adjust sensitivity levels for individual security cameras and block out areas you would like the software to ignore. Custom schedules can be created for recording with a mix of motion recording and continuous recording throughout the day.

The smart guard system allows for many triggers to be configured such as; object missing detection, foreign object detection, signal loss, security camera view blocked, security camera out of focus and general motion. On detection, the system can respond in a variety of ways which include; sending an email alert, making a telephone call, sounding an alarm, redirecting an optional Pan-Tilt-Zoom camera to that location or triggering an external relay. Of course if you ever need help with configuring anything on your system, our free technical support is available for as long as you own your EZWatch Pro surveillance system.

The Kit Includes

* 1 Business grade 4 channel PCI capture card, 30FPS total
* 1 Connection dongle with 4 video inputs and 1 audio input

For a mere $535.00usd you can have a little security for your family and your garden.

This is also one of the best interfaces I have seen....the EZwatchPro seems to be the best surveillance program I have seen (not having seen them all though)

EZWatch in Forbes Magazine

Forbes Magazine lists the EZWatch Pro system as "a security system that fits the bill", a great system at a reasonable price. "The software lets a home owner monitor the cameras remotely in real time from a PC, laptop or PDA anywhere in the world".

See what else Forbes had to say about the EZWatch Pro system and its features and benefits. Read full article here.

There are several methods of payment that includes a lease program for businesses (I didn't read that part of it, but they do have a lease program).

This problem of criminals invading homes to get your stuff isn't going to go away on its own....you must participate in the solution.

I would also put up a sign at each entrance stating that their image has been captured and relayed to an off-site, remote, location.....even if it isn't true.

And, you must get straight on face shots....none of that hat hiding bullshit.

Take the very best of care everyone,

Alex: You're getting a lion?
Dante: Yeah.
Alex: Why?
Dante: To protect my shit.
Alex: Never heard of a dog?
Dante: Dude, you can get past a dog. Nobody fvcks with a lion.

good info, good advertisement.

If you would trace the history of my posts you would notice I consistently create threads concerning the health, safety, advocating MJ and MMJ legalization, legal concerns/cases, my threads would also happen to include personal safely measures for MMJ patients and the rest of you might find interest in them.

I'm not selling anything, merely providing this information in all its topics/forms to help others help themselves or learn something.

I personally consider safely and security one of the most important aspects of what we do....and I don't see nearly enough emphasis to the subject.

And when I say I have looked into the matter and offer my assessment of anything....a product, or an article, or an opinion, you can trust that I really have.

Pleasure to make you acquaintance OGRag.

Thanks patrickbatem...that's all I was doing it for....to show people that had an interest in a nice entry level system that is amazingly upgradeable what was out there.

I've seen others purchase, and try to use other sub par systems and just piss their money away. That WalMart single camera system are good for limit purposes but aren't very adaptable, networkable, and only good for something like peep glasses in doors now.

As to the specific different system requirements or alternatives I can't help you there, but from what I read it seems the staff there would like any opportunity to discuss any issues related to their products. (I've also heard that there service, tech, staff are really very helpful......and a while back I read that they will even walk you through the installation on the phone...that's  :) )

I can't really imagine all of those major companies listed are using PC's though ?....I would think at least a few of them could be using no PC computers?

Take care patrick,

well it's a very good prfessional system, and for the money it's a steal. I was the operations manager and implemented the entire security protocol for my last company which included a cctv system similar to the ezwhatever, but it wasn't cheap. I believe we had 20 camera's if i can recall correctly.

And yep, ours ran off of a seperate PC.

The only thing i don't like about utilizing a PC as a security tool, is that when the power goes out, system errors (yea cuz windows is so awesome right? lol ) , virus etc.

I'd personally go with a dedicated security system, leave the pc for internet surfing. There's a lot of excellent systems out there that come w/ dedicated DVR, motion sensors, infrared cameras (up to 40ft), internet access w/ encrypted access all for under 2,000$.

Thanks for the info.

Keep in mind, that when putting up security cameras, to HIDE THEM REALLY WELL. Police, rippers, thieves, all pay attention to the homes w/ visible security cameras. Sure in this day of technology more and more people are adopting cameras and such, but if you're in the rural part of a city, poorer town, or quite frankly nobody else uses them around you, you'll stick out like a sore thumb. Probably more to thieves than police.

Stay safe.

And yes, windows does run on MAC.

Yep .. rippers count on the high probability that med growers will not call the police.

And when the police do come they just finish the job that the rippers started.

I think that I got one of the rippers to stop.

BTW the cops also took my home security system.

Med growers need the help of the police. Not the fear of them.

How do the people know where to go to rip people off?

Loose lips sink grow operations.

I personaly prefer lowtech security.

Dogs are a great deterrent. I personally prefer German shepherds as they are smart, loyal dogs that have a very intimidating bark. I don't have any dogs now but I don't have anything worth stealing, either.

Another great deterrent are firearms. Shotguns are nearly perfect for home defense... they are commonly used for hunting and are easier to explain than handguns... it is hard to miss with a shotgun and if you do you don't have to worry about stray bullets flying through your neighbors' house. For all you hippy types you can even get rubber rounds or stinger rounds that will hurt like hell but won't kill anybody. You can incapacitate home invaders without killing them. I personally have a Remington 12 gauge semi-automatic shotgun... hold four + one shotgun round... I don't like pump or double barreled shotguns... can't get the rounds out as fast.

I would also recommend a door brace/security bar like this:

http://www.amazon.com/Master-Lock-D...DCCSEN/dp/B0002YUX8I/ref=pd_sim_dbs_e_title_5

It will be very difficult to bust down your door with one of those in place.

If you don't have dead-bolts on your doors than be sure to install them!

This article and the whole premise is bullshit, and to take your time to go out and get all this equip to protect your grow is bullshit, plain and simple. Instead of wasting time and money on equipment, get to the source of the problem. The war on drugs. Prior to war on drugs were people getting robbed and killled for pot? Nope , cuz it didnt have an inflated value like it does today due to the war on drugs. Weed aint worth 300-400 an oz, its a ****ing plant.

Instead of going thru hoops to protect your grow you need to call your congressmen and senators and tell em they are full of shit. Only once the war on pot is stopped will the violence and robberies go down. Give people access to cheap pot or the ability to grow their own and the value will go down, and wahts the point in robbing someoen for something you can get? Its like robbing a house to get a drink of water. If we all got water no need to rob.

Fuck safety, i want sanity. Th fact that the govnment treats us like low life drug using crimnals, while they get shitface drunk on alcohol is a crock of shit. Like me and my girl staying in on the weekend and smoking a joint is more harmful than that senator that got pulled over looped out of his mind on Pills. And they point the finger at us? I say bullshit. Point the finger back at them, we aint the problem, THEY ARE!!!!

Their bullshit, greed and hypocrisy made the world we live in today. Call up your senators and tell em how full of hsit they are. I know i do. I send emails and phone calls each week and try to get others to do so. I know my senator will never stop hearing it form me til this war of stupidity is over.

You want a war on drug? Go aftet the drugs that kill, alcohol and cigs. Leave MJ users alone. We seem to be the only ones with common sense at this point

mr. nevermind ... i agree 100% that the "war on drugs" is the disease, and the home invasions are the symptom. fighting the "war" is clearly of the utmost importance, but until it is won, growers have to protect themselves from the symptoms. my puny little grow is unknown to anyone outside of the internet, but if i were a MMJ patient who would be in dire straights without the medicine, i would DEFINITELY be looking into getting a dog and some security equipment.

Nevermind

There weren't home invasions before indoor growing was invented where you're from?...and there will be after you accomplish your goal? (I'll help if you want (actually, I already have been))...In the mean time, If you don't mind, I would suggest all of us do what ever it takes to protect your families from the scum that venture the earth.

"Fuck safety"

What kind of flowers do you like?

ive got a few vids here of my mates house being broken into, is a basic cam system with sensors didnt protect the home because he was working but got clear pics of the intruder before he noticed the cAMS.

Lost a few bags, laptops, safe and a sword but through tattoos the intruder wont be hard to catch/ find.

I'm not quite sold on having dogs either.

1. If you're gonna get robbed, and you're not home, a dog won't stop anyone w/ a weapon.

2. If they have a gun, and fire on the dog, its possible depending where you live, that a neighbor calls the police. Then you've really stepped in it.

I'd rather just have a camera system setup, where i can monitor it when not at home. At the very least you'll know who screwed you, heck maybe it's your partner right? What happens after that... well ;)
