His father, Norval Sinclair Marley, was a white Jamaican of English descent whose family came from Essex, England. Norval was a captain in the Royal Marines, as well as a plantation overseer, when he married Cedella Booker; an Afro-Jamaican then 18 years old.[9] Norval provided financial support for his wife and child, but seldom saw them, as he was often away on trips. In 1955, when Marley was 10 years old, his father died of a heart attack at age 60.[10] Marley faced questions about his own racial identity throughout his life. He once reflected:

I don't have prejudice against meself. My father was a white and my mother was black. Them call me half-caste or whatever. Me don't dip on nobody's side. Me don't dip on the black man's side nor the white man's side. Me dip on God's side, the one who create me and cause me to come from black and white

I never knew that, although being a true cracker I'm no reggae fan, but I think that's related to seeing other crackers try to do the reggae thing.Having many musician aquaintances I've seen try this and it's some tough stuff to swallow, but I know lots of folks like Reggae and thats OK with Chaco.Crackers should stick to metal, punk or techno, we'll never understand walking in anothers shoes, however we might try....esp those of us who grew up with racist families and such.

Just a note, if you like your reggae you might want to watch the Regea Brittania that was just on BBC, it will be in torrents already for those who cant access iplayer (non Brits).

Im a "cracker" *cough* and i love my regea, but then im old and saw it the first time round, so maybe im not trying too hard like maybe some folks you know. Im always amused when young white people i know try to talk in an "urban" Black accent.

I was also surprised when I learned that bob's father was a white man, because I didn't know for quite a long time.

I think the fact that he was a mix of the two most polarized races, was part of what aloud him to communicate spiritually on such a large scale with his message. The spirit, the music and the drive to communicate the message, was being channeled through him sort of as a messiah showing the way for humanity to come together for he himself was from both worlds.

A piece of both worlds standing as one for the people, giving the message of one. There was definitely a spiritual synchronicity with Bob Marley. One Love

Why be surprised? I'm really not sure what skin color has to do with most anything. In the end, it really doesn't matter, imo.

Im surprised in a sense that it makes a difference, just to not having that knowledge in the first place, then acquiring that knowledge, plus i listen to some reggae

I love reggae. Listening to Culture, "Trust Me," as we speak.

Until the color of a man's skin
is of no more significance
than the color of his eyes,
there'll be war... - Bob Marley -

Bob Marley's father was white? WTF? Next thing ya know, we're going to find out that the Adam and Eve was black....
which if the bible and Mendels ideas could be combined will prove to be the case. Who says DNA testing are just for those wrongfully convicted?

There are a lot of mixed race people in Britain and Jamaica, just the same as there are in Haiti or Barbados, Bob Marley is just part of that melting pot. In The UK, though we do have issues of race, its very different to The States i think. We do have racists, but its more anti Islam than anti black(though that does simplify it a bit).

If you are genuinely interested in how this can be, watch the Reggae Britannia program that was on the BBC recently, it will certainly be in the torrents by now.
