I am losing my vision

Hi I recently switched to vertical and now I loathe going into my room due to the lights. I leave my room and have white spots for an hour. My eyes feel like they just got raped. I wear glasses so sunglasses aren't and option and honestly I think it would still be too bright.

On top of that I don't trust my heater in the off cycle so it would be nice to have the ability to pop in if needed.

I am looking for a green light(s) so I can enter the room during the dark period. I really am only finding green cfl type party lights. I bought some and was skeptical so I just let it run in my bedroom. It seems the paint or whatever they use on the inside loses it's green after a short while.

It still looks green but I am worried it is baking off the paint and this could lead to some hermies. Figured I could buy some thick green plastic like they use on strobe lights and just add this over the bulb. I have recessed lights already in now so it would be easy to glue it over the casing.

Has anyone used these? If you use green lights let me know what works for you. Do they make a green bulb specifically for photosensitive plants like mj.

Thanks for any suggestions.

They sell green led lights just for that kind of thing. I'd still try to use sunglasses in the meantime, they help.

u need shades at least , put on your regular glasses on under these

the lady to the right has bright mylar behind her . no ill effects

Thanks to both of you. I will look at the led and for a pair of those fancy shades too. I put on my Oakley ski goggles with mirror tint and it was still bright as hell.

My room is 6 feet wide by 12 feet and the lights are cooking me when I am working in the garden so it would be nice have soft green light to work under while watering.

I could just shut off the mh and hps while I tend to the garden and run regular lights but I don't want to rob the plants of that light intensity for and hour or two a day.

Thanks!

Maybe try a welding helmet/face shield first.

There are many styles of helmets/face shield and different tints available. If you go to a welding equipment supply shop you can get an idea of how much each shade blocks. Number 1 being the lightest tint, number 12 being much darker; as in arc welding. Ask to see the ranges for light brazing, (oxy-acetylene).

Find a cheap helmet/face shield, with a common lens size.

I am recommending a helmet/face shield because you wear glasses and helmets tend to direct your vision forward, through your glasses. Also, a helmet will remove/block external light.

You can also get flip down magnifiers for a helmet!

Hope this gives you some useful alternatives!

1. get sunglasses - make sure its 100% UV 400 blockers or whatever, get good dark ones.
2. get side flaps for the above, those horse blinder looking things, not sure what they called.
3. get dark skigoggles and put that over the sunglasses (dont wear your glasses I guess)

you oughta be able to look at the lights this way without frying your eyes. additionally, I make a handheld cardboard shield held close to head level.

It used to bother me too, but I learned to not look at the light directly, and I am fine.

Do you really think that turning off your main lights for an hour or two is going to make a difference noticable in the final product? Outdoor plants experience cloudy periods/days and do just fine. Good luck with this!

Welding goggles.

Yes absolutely. I am in my room for an hour or two each day. Running a ten week strain so thats 70 days. I think 140 hours less HID would definately make a difference. How much I don't know.

To the other poster I had considered a welding mask of some sort. Maybe an auto darkening one. It is impossible not to look into the light. The X's are plants the o's are my lights. Also anytime my back is to the lights I can feel the heat on my back. Not comfortable.

I can't wear most sunglasses because my glasses need to be on underneath. Without them I can't see shit. My ski goggles claim 99% of uv is blocked but they still are not sufficient.

Definately would prefer feeding when dark using a green light that would be safe to the garden. Less heat, less bliding light. Does anyone use a green light themselves that they know will not cause me problems. What brand, where did you get it?

Thanks for all the replies!

For some reason my x's and o's dont save right. Basically I have a 6 by 15 room with 4 lights running down the middle. Again its vertical so I have plants on every wall and then between each HID i have more plants. So the room from above would look like 4 rectangular walls of plants with a light in the center of each.

Consider Glassblower's Lenses

Consider Glassblower's Lenses

Well if you're dead-set on something consider this:

Glass blower's lenses. They're a bit easier to see thru than welding lenses, but they do a great job of sheilding you from the light. Particularly the kind of light you get from a HPS. Glass blower's lenses are designed to guard against the Sodium Flare that one creates while heating glass with a very hot torch. As I'm sure you're aware HPS is a Sodium based light, which is why it's so yellow. It's light also very close to the same wavelength of the Sodium flare. So there ya go. I will attach a URL for you. That should get you started in thinking about finding appropriate eye safety wear. Good luck with this!

I used to have a really cool pair that was was covered with a thin layer (just a couple atoms width) of gold which also took care of any UV's. I can't recall where I got 'em but a few minutes searching will find you all kinds of sources.
