Hydrogen Peroxide for Fungus Gnats?

So I ran across a few posts/articles claiming watering plants with a 4 to 1 mixture of water/hydrogen peroxide (the 3% kind) will kill Fungus Gnat larvae.

Has anyone tried this? It says it won't hurt the plants but will kill the larvae instantly. I have my doubts.

Seems like it would kill bennies too.

Instead use Microbe Lift BMC - http://www.amazon.com/Ecological-Labs-AEL20036-Mosquito-Treatment/dp/B007UTE55A

That doesn't answer my question at all. I've been growing for a decade...I know how to get rid of Fungus Gnats.

I'm just curious if these other methods actually work.

I use h202 constantly every watering. Think h202 prevents the environment in which attracts fungus gnats and other shit in the first place. Better as a preventative than cure for sure. I'm using 29% h2o2 if you were wondering

Chin up, I'm ordering a bottle ;) Seems easier/cheaper than Dunks.

I'd also be curious to know if anyone has used H2O2 alone. I tend to think of it as a gardenweb (houzz) solution re: no solution at all

Seems far too reactive to get at the centre of a root ball. Kind of like Cl, there's so much organic material to react with penetration is poor.

But then, maybe it's worked for someone?

i tried it- might have worked but i was attacking with multiple things- didnt bother plants visibly though

i grow organic now and just topdress with some sand/diatomaceous earth...it kills them pretty quick without introducing anything into the root zone to affect beneficials

I once experimented with coco as a mulch layer without knowing it would cause a small fungus gnat population to explode in numbers.
To correct things I vacuumed off the coco and there were hundreds if not thousands of wiggling larvae, I soaked the top layer of dirt with a 1% h2O2 solution and really enjoyed watching those little fuckers melt back into thedirt they came from.
The peroxide solution didn't get rid of all of them but the microbe lift finished them off easily over the next few weeks.
Peroxide is useful for knocking down large populations safely, beneficials should have been fine since only the top inch or two got treated.

I've been watering once a week, for the last few weeks, with a 15 mls of 9% solution of hyd per in about 200mls - 250mls of water (which is perhaps a little stronger than most garden websites suggest). It hasn't killed off fungus gnats but it has helped to control them, I think. (I've got some fly papers hanging too and commit terrible atrocities on them with a vacuum cleaner each day which leave me feeling terribly guilty).Where it really shines, used in a more concentrated solution, is for pre-watering soil (or, I guess any other medium) before putting in cuttings. Was having no luck trying to get them to root with these pesky things around but this really seems to have solved the problem. I use a slightly stronger solution (15ml to 100ml). Obviously, it supplies oxygen to the the soil - not sure if that sticks around long enough to help - but the cuttings I have taken in the last three weeks and planted into peroxided soil, have taken, 10 out of 12. Much better than the zero I was getting! Maybe some larvae still survive after this treatment, maybe not, but it works in this respect at least.

Think it isn't a one stop shop once these things are established but a good part of your arsenal.

As an afterthought, "food grade", high strength is a little tricky to get here so, if you can buy it, you may have better luck.

Yes it works, just did it a few weeks ago...

I used a higher dosage, closer to 8-9%....

Watered with it, then watered with nutrient 10 minutes later to dilute it...
