Hydrofarm Issues

Hi all, I'm designing a grow and had a question for anyone with experience with the Hydrofarm Sunburst reflector. I'm looking at a 250 HPS, and here's my question: in addition to the light there are add-ons for it you can buy on the website. The add ons are an air-cooling kit (which I will get), an "extra" 4 inch flange, and a glass safety lens. Do I want the safety lens? Will I be able to air-cool the light if the safety lens is there? Do I need an "Extra" flange? This is a height restricted (36") grow using SCROG, so odds are the plants are going to get real close to the light. I plan on using a 6" Vortex with speed controller to pull air through the light and then through the scrubber and out.

Lastly, does anyone know the dimensions of the CAN 33 filter? Will it fit in a 2 x 2 x 3 cab?

Just got a 5 pack of fem'd Sensi Star beans so I'm eager to get started. Thanks for any input.

As far as the light, yes you want the lense. Without it you just have an open hood blowing air on/through the light.

Is it included in the "cooling kit"?

When I purchased my Super Sun, the "cooling kit" options were the lense and extra flange.

If one flange is included, it may be a good idea for you to pick it the extra now while you're ordering.

I didn't need my extra initially but now that I've expanded into two cab's, it's being put to use.

I use a CAN 9000 and it sits on top of my C13. Which is 2.5x2.5x6 or so. I know a 33 is shorter and a lot fatter... and my guess it will NOT fit in 2x2x3. You may want some height for plant growth.

I pull air from my light, and it gets pushed out the side of the cab via a Vortex, into the CAN filter sitting on top. Not enough room to fit it all in the cabinet. In other words I push air out of my carbon filter.

6" vortex is mad overkill for that size of a setup. A 4" Vortex is plenty for a 400w HPS, and I wouldn't go 6" until I was at 600w or above.

My flowering cab exhaust is always on, 24/7, to keep humidity down at night. I only use a speed controler on the mom cab, and have it turned down all the way using a 4" Vortex and it's still overkill for the setup.

Good luck and do some searching around my man.

Hey thanks a lot dude. I know the 6" is complete overkill; the only reason I wanted to get one is that there is a huge sale and I could use this fan on larger applications; basically, I wanted a fan that could handle more heat. Right now I'm having trouble figuring out what CAN filter to get. In fact I don't really know what carbon filter to get. I'm trying to keep it as small as possible. Will the 6" vortex cause problems (I'm getting the speed controller too so I can dial the setting down).

The Lens is a seperate item from the cooling fan system. You would need to get both for it to be effective. The cooling fan pulls 100 cfm and has a 4" flange built into it. I think the fan is about at tall as the system itself.

As for the Can 33, its 13"H x 12"round with a 6" flange it will fit in the cab but take up about 1/2 of the room. I would get even a smaller carbon filter, or filter outside the cab. Here is what I would use this Small ass carbon filter its only 4 3/4" x 4 3/4" and can be mounted right on your cab. Its a $100 and its refillable, plus it has a fan so thats one less thing you need to buy.

That is probably the smallest scrubber I've ever seen. However, it does not accept inline fans as it has its own so that's probably not what I want.

Any way I could run a Can 9000 (meant to be paired with the smaller 4" vortex) with the 6" by using a speed controller? The 9000 is small enough to fit in the cabinet I've designed.

Maybe I'm just being stupid and should go with the 4" vortex, but I feel like it won't cool the 250 enough for me to get it really close. Am I wrong? Seeing as there are severe height restrictions in my cab, I need the plants to be as close to the light as possible. Will a 4" vortex be able to cool a 250 enough so that the plants are within a few inches of the glass lens?

YW... If it's on sale grab it. It's a great piece of equipment. check mdhydro.com if you don't mind ordering online... I always drop that link because they always have Vortex and CAN on sale and I've safely got a bunch of gear. With the setup you may need a 6" to 4" reducer, I believe the flanges are built 4". Mine are anyway. I'm not a big fan of using a bunch of extra adapters and reducers... buy it to fit to keep things neat and clean. Your mileage may vary!

bghydro has these new smaller filters, right on the main store page... the "elf 4 inch " and "goblin 6 inch " - I have the elf for my hydrohut mini and it's a nice smaller sized filter but large enough to clean the air. Check it out.

Yes. A 4" Vortex pulling from my 400w HPS keeps my cab around 75-80f (lower at night). In an eairler grow, if you check my older gallery pics, shows my hydro girls growing up into and around the 400w light... I mean it was buried in the cannabis jungle. I wasn't expecting such explosive growth... gotta love hydro. Since I had the lense and was pulling air from the hood directly... it was not a problem.

Well I bit and got the 4" Vortex with the Elf scrubber, as well as a 250 watt HPS with a cooltube built under the reflector. Thing is, now I'm using a 2'w x 1'd x 31"h cab. Will the 174 CFM of the Vortex be enough to cool the light and cab? If not, I'll return it and get the 6" Vortex, but I'd like to avoid it because it takes up more space in the cab and I'm trying to keep this as stealth as possible. Keep in mind its running through a scrubber, but the Elf scrubber is small with a 4 in diameter and length of 10 inches.

hey james, how much did you pay for your vortex? and where did you get it from? im trying to purchase one right now but i dont want to shell out too much cash.

thanks!
