Humi-dome/seedling question

G

Guest

My babies are now 10 days old(started from seed). They have been under agrosun floruos with a humidity dome on top. They are getting very close to hitting the underside of the dome now.

I was wondering what is the norm for removal of the dome?Is it safe to remove it now?I am a little unsure of proper humidity levels for seedlings and am nervous about RH dropping too drastically when I permanently remove the dome.

The veg room will be ready by week's end,so they will be transplanted and going under a mh light around the 2 week old mark.Does that sound about right?

Thanks for any help!

sure, you can take off the dome at this point...............and for added measure, you can acclimate them by providing some misting to the plant a couple of times a day

good luck

I have to tell you that I personally never used a humidity dome with my seedlings. With clones it's a different story, but seedlings do not need a humidity dome. When your RH is low in your room, a simple remedy is to spray the little ones with water once in a while, that's quite sufficient for them.

RH impact on plants IMHO is greatly exagerated, of course except the time in flower when it shold be kept low.

At least that's the way I treat my seedlings.

One way of checking if your seedlings will be ok out of the dome is to take off the dome for a while and watch your plants , to start the leaves will be up and reaching for the light as they had been under the dome. Keep a watch , dont leave for hours, instead check regular. If the leaves start to droop and the seedling lookin like its wilting, u might need to replace dome, a short while after dome replaced u will see it pick up... if u take dome off and it goes a looong time with no wilt then its prob ok to leave off....

I find it more important with cuttings to use the humidity dome on, than on seedlings.
Personally ,(but dont take as a certainty) i use a humidity cover until a day after the seedling breaks the surface, and let them continue in veg under c fluoros (coolwhite)
hope this helps, im sure there are some more knowledgable people on here to shed more light on things for u

I agree 100% with Kov on this one,of the dozens of seedlings I've grown I've never used a humidity dome.I always use one when I clone with RW cubes. If you keep it well misted like you should the RH in the dome is around 85%.perfect for new cuttings but not nevessary or needed for seedlings.

You can also acclimate them slowly, remove it for a few hours at a time, and increasing the amount of time it is left off each time, until you no longer keep it on.

Thats exactly how I do my clones but with seedlings all that wouldnt be necessary if you just treat it like the veg stage, thats all it is

Thanks for all the help everyone.

I have taken the dome off and will monitor them.

I am concerned that my seedlings stems are all around 3 inches long, but they only have the second set of true leaves starting. Some of the stems seem a little weak-like and these seedlings are tending to lean a little.

Is this normal?Or has using the humi-dome caused this?

I have viewed some photos of other seedlings on here, and they seem to be further along than mine(or maybe they were clones?)...just wondering what 11 day old healthy seedlings should look like?

My first grow,so lot's to learn and I'm a little nervous!

With fluoro lights u can get quite close to them with the plant.. will help to reduce the seedling "stretching", i keep mine within the range of a few inches(the closer the better), but of course be sure u got cooling for the bulbs and ventilation (air flow )through the flower room. You can still burn or be too hot even with fluoro.

By getting those fluoro's closer u will have more usable by the plant light.. the light diminishes over a shorter distance compared to hps bulbs, so the closer the more light to plant thats usable, so u shld see quicker growth..
Also with some good airflow that creates a "breeze" on the leaves and stem u will strengthen the stem , and soon u wont be worrying that its weak
When u switch to the MH u will need to move further away from light.. ive not used MH , only hps , but im sure the same goes for MH . you dont want to burn your babies.

EDIT dunno who puts the rep messages ,doesnt sign them but HI  to whoever said hi :D

my first 3 sprouts i started under floros with no dome and then moved to 400 w MH about 36 inches from the bulb.. I checked regularly to make sure they were handling the change well, i sprouted two more directly under the MH about 40 inches from the bulb. I would be concerned about babying them too much under the dome.. Also they need air movement to strengthen the stems.

Next time, dont use a dome at all for your seedlings, just use 4 ft 2 lamp shoplight and keep the lamps 1/2 inch above the plants at all times, you end up with a 5 inch bush with about 20 leaves. Then its time for the HID's.Your plants have stretched towards the light,it was too far away from the tops.A good idea besides having the flo's 1/2 inch above the tops to reduce stretch,is to leave an inch or so of no soil in the pot so that when the seedling goes through its initial stretch, you can come back and put more dirt in supporting the stem.Use an oscillating fan from the start also.Drop the humidity dome altogether except for clones
