HPS Issues..

I recently made a purchase of a new bulb, an EYE Hortilux 400w Super HPS bulb. Does it take a while for it to 'warm up' for first time use? It's been on for about 15 minutes and its not anywhere near fully illuminated, seems just the cable around the inner filament is illuminated.. I dont want to shut it off, incase it needs to be warmed up and ill end up f'ing it up, so i cant plug another bulb in to test if its the ballast.. to be continued..

they do take a while to warm up but i dont know how long really ive never payed mucn attentuion...usually a frw minutes though with a really dark orange light or even pink at the start when it is firing up..... If you do trun off, make sure you leave it 20 minutes to cool down before trying to turn it on again, but when you do, just make sure its screwed right in and if not tighten it up....

step one

SHUT IT OFF

step two

CHECK YOUR BULB AND BALLAST FOR CO-ORDINATING WATTAGES AND GAS TYPE (HPS should be an HPS specific ballast, halide a mh specific ballast)

step three

IF THE ABOVE CHECKS OUT OK, TRY TURNING IT BACK ON, MAY HAVE NOT FIRED UP PROPERLY THE FIRST TIME

step four

IF STEP three DOESN'T WORK AND YOUR BALLAST KIT IS IN GOOD SHAPE/NEW IT'S LIKELY YOUR BULB

it sounds like it could possibly be the ballast but more than likely it's a defective bulb

i have a gas-lamp tester so i dont even have to take it out of the socket to test if its good or not LOL get one theyre invaluable

welp, i shut it off and put the old bulb back in. That bulb fires up and works fine. On the Box it says "Use only with ballast for ansi s51 lamps" the lamp that works has 's51' stamped on it..
I'll plug the new lamp back in and see what happens..

oh yea capt, cant let all those wonderful grinds goto waste!

s51 is the ballast code, sometimes the bulb won't have that printed directly on it but the package sure will

The one that work the EYE? I know that eye will credit the distributor for defective goods no questions asked, go back to the distributor and exchange it for the right one, make sure it says s51 on the package, or tell them the position the bulb is being hung and if they have any brains theyll sell ya the right thing

be good

well i let the lamp and ballast go all night and about 30 minutes before they switched off, i tried the EYE Hortilux again and this time she fired right up, about 15 seconds of warm up and bam it was bright..

I dont understand what happened the first time.. :chin:

could this be a problem with my ballast ya think? we'll see what happens tonight..

I would have a spare ignitor/capicitor on hand. What I've seen, is usually the ballast is ok. I had a terrible time with the 400's and 430's, about 3 years ago,I was getting from 1000bulbs, not that it was their fault or anything, but, I was buying like 6 at a time, and found, in one shipment that 5 of the 6 didnt light up, or were dim. Hell some had loose sockets to glass. 1000 was in contact with the manufacturer, and I was sending them back to them, and after 4 or 5 months of not knowing if the they would strike up or not, I went to 600's. I did find normal or non grow type bulbs at local DYI store that work, but lack a bit in quality of lumens, but usable. But now I got like 4, 400/430 set ups gathering dust....for a while anyway. I'll build something to use them in, eventually.

well i had bought the ballast/light combo from InsideSun.com in April. And the bulb was not a hortilux, so i thought i should buy a hortilux and use the 400 it came with as a back up. I havnt had any issues with my 400, yet..

an ignitor/capactior is easy to obtain for these lights? and to change?

hey mike

hey mike

hes right about 1 thing, if it's not the bulb it was the ignitor, im sorry for being misleading i actually said "ballast" but i did mean the components of the ballast.

capacitor/ignitor are available at ANY electrical supply house in your area,,,,,,jerz, just look in the yellowpages or ill make yer lfe even easier doggie-----> www.411.com "search buisnesses" type in electrical supplies into the area where it asks what industry and also enter your zip code.. if all else fails pm me i'm pretty local 2 u ive a place in midtown that will ship to u whatever u need... if u order through their website shipping is free i think dunno if they have these parts on the site so dunno if the discount carrys over youd have to caLL.
