how to take good Trichome pics

I'd like to learn how to take some good trichome pics, I've got a DSLR and and some decent lenses, but im not going to buy a $500 macro lens.

I'm wondering if anyone can suggest a good way to get some trich photos using what I already have. (canon digital rebel xti, "kit" zoom lens 18-55mm, 50mm 1.8 prime lens) I've read that I can use extension tubes, or "reverse mount" the 50mm on the zoom to get macro shots, but are there any other good methods?

I'm no expert or pro or anything but when i take my pictures I'll always use a tripo set the camera to macro mode keep the flash on add aditional lighting and for close up i'll stick a magnifying glass infront of the camera
