How to NOT come up in google?

Marshall

Member
I have a unique name and when you Google it, the first page is almost all news articles about my arrest. It was a rather large bust.

Fast forward and I am home looking for a job and I just cringe someone is going to Google me and see my picture news articles etc.

I know I can't control or remove the news articles. My idea is to try to create new pages on other sites that would come up first. Most people don't go past the first couple Google pages.

Any ideas on how to get my desired results on the first couple pages?

Not to make you feel worse Marshall...but just about a week ago I was reading a newspaper online and there was an article...posted as a "job seeker's advice" thing...that was telling folks how important google was to their job hunt, because doing a google search is one of the most common things for employers to do to research job applicants. It was giving suggestions on how a person could manipulate the results that show up when an employer google's their name. I wish I could remember where I read it....let me go look for it...

Well, I couldn't find it. I do remember that the article began by saying how a lot of negative stuff can be revealed through a google search, like what is happening to you. But the end of the article was talking about ways of boosting your reputation by adding stuff to google yourself. I don't remember what the hell those suggestions were though. Probably if you googled something like "make yourself appear more employable on google" you'd find some suggestions.

A quick criminal background check that most companies do will show any convictions.

There are loads of sites that do those checks for a minimal fee and for larger companies is a mandatory part of the screening process. Even small companies will do it when the job has anything to do with handling cash - or involves valuables.

Hell even Mom and Pop shops do FB/ google checks now a days because of the amount available info and gives them a glance of what that person has made available online in a few secs.

Companies that hire want to know who it is they are bring into the fold. Background checks for them just make sense and just take a moment.

Having a criminal background makes it a rough go when so many are unemployed and employers can pick and choose amongst the most qualified.

Wish i could help

Yelp, start reviewing restuarants and business's.
merchantcircle dot com

Get creative, I simply checked a shady San Diego lawyers name and plucked those sites, from it.

You will need to use your name on those sites and eventually, your posts in Yelp..etc will take on a life of their own. Well, at least in the case I discovered.

Whatever you do, please post results? jpt

not much for sure, I only mentioned it as it has some visual impact on 'connectivity' of the net.

sorry to say but unless the OP pays someone to load the net full of good stuff about him and to perform 'hits' on the new info he's doomed to his past life being on display.

just writing new blurbs about a person won't help unless those links are clicked on, AND clicked on more times than the previous articles ever were. Google assigns the order of listed articles to be displayed from most popular (most hits or clicks) to the least popular.

If they take the OP's name and add the word 'arrest' to it he's a goner as his arrest record will appear pronto. a name change would fix this issue.

or maybe misspell his last name on any application, a small misspell would be tolerated by his bank as he deposits paychecks.

could you not just change your name ? atb.ww

I thought about using my middle name as my first name. My bank would probably accept that especially if direct deposited. But you still have to show drivers license social security card etc.

And yes I know no matter what I do a background check will kill me. This last job opportunity I lost only went back 7 years but since I just got out of prison I was dead.

I just accepted another job and there seems to be no background check.

I am going to start posting reviews and putting my name out there on other sites. If I just sit all day and click on the links will that help or does Google look at unique ip addresses? I'll be on the road all day with a laptop. What about just hitting free wife spots and clicking the links? One day I would out click the news articles...

Both those sites (Fb, LnkIn) you mentioned are notorious for digging up info you did not choose display. Hate it!! Friends ask why I don't want to be their "friend" on Facebook....fuhgeddaboudit!!

I already have a few shallow friends without the need to post lame things on Facebook or take pics of a meal I had....geeze.

There is a big difference in disappearing, and becoming a new person, or remaining who you are, but covering up what you have done. Neither are easy and you can't have both.

You can ask search engines to remove the results you don't want people to see. Google has a URL removal request you should check out.

You can contact the webmasters and ask them politely if they will remove them. Some might, some won't.

so on your employment application, where it says:

"Criminal History?"
"Explain."

You put down:
"No."
"Really good lawyers."

and let the chips fall where they may.......

I've googled my name but it just comes up w/another guy (same name) w/some pretty good creds, semi famous due to his fathers notoriety.

These days you cannot hide from your past--
Better to work on how to explain it, to keep you looking like it was a one time thing, and what you have learned and how you have grown from it-- (Even if it is all bullshit!!):tiphat:

These days a lot of companies don't even do their own investigating anymore. They like to use 3rd party companies that dig up dirt for a living.

I had a company on my resume that I had worked for previously, and I intentionally left my supervisor's name out of it because he is my step-father, and I didn't want to use a family member for a reference.

Well the company had been out of business for 5 years, and yet the background check company not only managed to find out who my supervisor was, but they found out where he lived and his phone number, and called him at home at 10pm to ask questions about me 5 years after the company went out of business.
