Lets face it folks fans are loud,my 8 inch Can Can sounds like one of my old race bikes at Daytona on full blast so lets just see what we can do about that.

First stop Menards:

This type of wood was the thickest panels they had took them home cut them up and away we went:

And then I struck gold at Lowe's:

These panels are used for Laminate floors and come prelined with thick plastic sheathing so get out the Roto-Zip and zip away and frame:

Now line the insides with egg shell foam as all is well. I have 380 square feet and I get the most out of every single inch but now I can do it with half the noise.

By the way Lowe's will cut the sheets for ya if you are afraid of loosing a finger or thumb or if you name is Tim :)

Nice mr.wags. I can pretty much see whats goin on there... but is the first pic the same unit as the bottom ones? Looks to be two different filter placements. Got any pics of the fan mounted on the box? Keep it easy, Caddy

Hey Mr. Wags, I dont understand where you put the plastic laminate pieces. Did you put them around the box that was already there or is picture #1 the finished product?

They come like that at Lowe's. The first shot is my box for my fan for the lights the second one is for the scrubber. As I stated these panels at Lowe's can be precut BY THEM for the size ya need that is why I went with different wood as compared to the first box I made, the Diesel was working hard on me and could not cut a straight line to save my life :pointlaug so I thought what the hell lets try these and well they work excellent.

Wags you clever devil - excellent solution to your problem! I'm wondering about heat? Are you concerned about holding heat produced by the fan motor? Heat will shorten the life of the motor.

Thanks Oh Wise One Wags - Precisely what I was looking for !!!

From my extensive research into Sound Proofing (for a home studio project) I found that density is EVERYTHING and 5/8's of an inch Drywall (or thicker) is apparently the way to go when it comes to boarding up windows and such so I'm wondering how making a box out of something similar for a fan might work ... Then again the vibration may (or may not) shake out most of the fibers into the air equalling viscious lung ailments i'm sure ... ??

I just watched a short Video I DL'd off of a Torrent or emule? (can't remember) called "Top Quality Home Growing" by "Krom Productions" and the two fans they used both came boxed like the one in this thread for the purposes of sound dampening however they didn't get into how they were made , ect ...
