How to make 100% bio degredable pots for pennies and minutes.

I thought I had to share this that I thought up today. It is kind of awesome and I just tested it today with some material I bought from the paint store.

edit: I was going to put a picture here but max fixe images/post. Scroll down to see the finished pot!

I got some brown paper - 100g/cm^2 - from recycled material.
This kind of paper is a little too thin I believe, better to get some thicker material. If it's too thick you will have a hard time folding it on the other hand.

The pot will end up completely cubic (if you are careful folding). Cut a piece of cardboard that is the size of one side of the pot, this we will use as a measuring device later. Make sure it is square!

Cut one piece of paper per pot, which is three times bigger than the smaller cardboard piece.

My setup:

So I am way to baked to give an explanation to each of the pictures but I will just dump them in order.

Hmm, I'd be very interested in a fabric version. Can't tell from the picks how to do it. I'd like some small about a 1 liter fabric pots. Thanks. -granger

An old sock might do. :0)

I love the ingenuity!

Thanks for sharing.

That is something that I thought of. I was thinking of attaching fabric to the paper somehow; then staple or sew the corners together. I will be away for the weekend so I won't have time to add descriptions to the pics nor try the fabric pots out.

I suggest you try it, and upload pictures of course!

The ones I made works really well for seedling pots etc. They are 7cm across. I also made some 19cm across but the bottom could come out if lifting them. For a one liter pot I think it might work. Just make it 10cm across. As I said, my small ones are 7cm and I can handle them however I want even if they are wet.

Another idea would be to use double or triple paper. I think that would make some sturdier pots :)

Thank you for the thread and ideas ziggestardust (WTH is ziggestardust?) lol... but like granger said, the pics leave me confused but the fabric idea is thought provoking. I grow in PPKs and the transplanting from small veg ppk to bloom PPK is a pita. The sock/fabric idea though, within the veg ppk (I know, I sound like your picturs look.. lol, just breakin em..) I will bring this idea up at the PPK thread, if you dont mind... about the pics, they might be more expresive if the background was a different color than the focus item... thanks again:tiphat:

So does she love you, and are you guys going steady?:)

Just so that doesn't go over most people's heads it was a reference to the folded paper fortune tellers that you would do in grade school.

I will provide an explanation to the pics. I am, however, abroad now and it is a pain to do it with my iPhone. Be sure to post pics if you decide to test it!

Heres what I came up with. The little black disk is from cutting 1.5" holes with a spade bit in black buckets: theyre for sock stability :tiphat:. Fold that paper? wouldnt be any good at that but cut the end off an old sock... right in my wheelhousee.. thanks for leading my thoughts this way... nd it too is biodegradeable.:tiphat:

The socks work, but I need something bigger. Any idears? Thanks. -granger
Christmas stockings? You know it would be fun at least one month out of the year.

On a serious note I was looking at some cases of wine bottles the other day thinking about how it is a bio-degradable SOG waiting to happen. All those deep square holes in a small grid pattern was really getting my gardening thumb all green looking with the Jesus Effect going on and stuff.
