How to keep outdoor plants stealth?

So im planning on doing an outdoor grow this spring but im looking to keep things stealth can anyone recomend a short early harvesting strain or technique for keeping the plants shorter an more bushy. I plan on veg. the seeds under CFL's until later spring ( Northeast has some unpredictable weather early in the season) Any advice would be greatly appreciated

You have several options here.... But you need to be more specific than "short"..... :D

The easiest would be to simply, continually pinch off the tallest growing tips so that the side branches grow outward.... This may need to be tied down as well depending on plant growth and security requirements....

Another common technique, low stress training (LST) is done by training the plant to grow low, pulling the main leader downward a little at a time until it is growing almost horizontal. The plant will have to be continually tied down as it grows, and there is a possiblility animals could trip over your strings and break something!!!

One simple technique, which takes some skill/observation to perform without causing too much injury to the plant, is super-cropping. It is done by simply bending the tallest growing branches where they're pliable to cause the plant to lose the main branch dominance and increase lateral branching. The top few inches of the shoot may even be tied down the side of the main trunk for a perminant structural change. This technique results in lots of head bud formation in the shape of a dome, under good light conditions............Check out the "Finding Fatdandy" thread

You could grow strains that flower automatically or are called autoflowering... These strains are not light dependant in triggering flowering, and will be done mid summer.... Mighty mite is a well known autoflowering strain with good potency, and mdzand has many autoflowering lowrider hybrids. Do not grow lowrider on its own because its been known to have medium-low potency.............Check out the ALF thread....

A plant which was continually topped in less than optimal light conditions...

Pinching is stimply pruning off the growing tip at the end of a branch. Any Growth tip can be pruned (pinched), but the most benefit will be received from pinching the upper, tallest branches, as they are restricting branching the most. The growing tip of the plant produces the hormone auxin which gets more and more diluted in stem tissue as the distance from the growth point increases. The hormone acts as a lateral shoot bud inhibitor. Pinch off the greatest source of the hormone, the growth tip, and the lateral buds along the stem will be able to grow uninhibited until the lateral buds start dividing and turning into a shoot/branch.... Supercropping does much the same thing, disrupting the inhibiting hormone flow from the growth tip.

Pulling a branch horizontal also disrupts the flow of auxin, leading to more branching...

Thanks PL. That clears a lot up. I actually already do that with my houseplants. I'll try that this year with my girls.

Wow pipeline where did you get that electronmicroscope shot and that cross-section. I'd be really interested in seeing other botany slides pertaining to cannabis. Stunning shots.

Your best bet will be to put your effort into locating a quality autoflowering strain. My first choice personally would be Guerrilla Gold.

If you can't find an autoflowering strain, put your seedlings out small and late, top them if necessary, and situate them in low-light areas.

if your concerned about a certain height and trying to keep the plants under 5 feet for example then maybe you should look into planting them later in the year, if you start a plant in spring no topping will keep it from getting 8 foot. but if you start a plant in early summer it will have less time to grow and goes into flowering sooner.

another method for tying down with no straings attatches is to take a young flexible plant and bend the tip down to the ground a set a heavy ass rock on its main growth tip. it will eventually stay like this and all the side branches will take over.

Homegrown....

Next year I'm planning on using white cleome plants to help conceal my other plants. It grows up to 6' and resembles MJ before flowering. It has a peppery smell, sticky sap and thorny stems. Said to repel deer. I've grown them for nearly 20 years and no deer ever bothered them in the same place the deer topped my zinnia, tomato and chlili pepper this year. It is listed in wildflower books as "spider flower" so it shouldn't be suspicious in most outdoor growing areas. Keep plants about 3 to 4 ft apart and staggered as to not look like a row of soldiers. They attract bees, moths and hummingbirds making a natural setting for your plants.

Here's to GROWING GREAT IN 08!!!
