how to keep algee away from water without hurting plants?

i was wondering this as i have a big outside water container that collects water from the roof
its some kind of white and light can partly penetrate so it gets a few algae
esp after a period of hot weather
i was wondering what can i put in the water that keeps algae down but doesnt hurt plants too much?
i know chlorine is good to fight algaes but also haerd that plants dont like chlorine
i was thinking of maybe using some called Atamon which is used to conserve jelly etc
it contains natrium benzoat ( as far as i remember) and its told to but somewhat not poisoning but im not sure how plants react to it?

can you cover the tank with something or paint it? That may be the best option. No light, no algae

Eminem has the right idea, algae are plants and will not live without adequate light. That said, large rainwater collecting tanks like yours can harbor other micro-nasties such as amoebas. You can add up to 30 Milliliters per gallon of 3% concentration Hydrogen peroxide without any harmful affects to cannabis root systems. This will completely eradicate nearly all micro-life in your water source with no ill effects to your plants. In fact, I personally believe that it can be beneficial (so long as you aren't trying to raise some good microlife) as it introduces free-radical oxygen to the roots and medium which facilitates more rapid nutrient uptake. Good luck and happy gardening!

tnx for the input guys
its a big 1000 liter one but ill try to paint it when the rainy weather they promised for the next days are over
hydrogen peroxide sounds like a good bet
ive already had good results with it in my aquarium bubble cloner fighting some kinda fungi at roots
it also gave a lot of oxygen as a bonus so i use it now in small doses on a regular basis
ill see if painting and giving at some HP will cure it
tnx again for the input guys

Aha! You did not mention the use of bubblers.

H2O2 and an aquarium bubbler have similar effects when it comes to upping total dissolved oxygen. (I've actually used regular dosages of peroxide in some of my early compact DWC apps to 'cheat' on my dissolved oxygen rates for a given temperature. Very useful when in a cramped mini-grow and higher water temps are impossible to avoid)

Bubblers and a little planning can largely solve these problems though, I am now a HUGE proponent of cheap aquarium bubblers and they are the lynch-pin of my organic bubble bath grow method. H2O2 can still be useful in severe situations beyond the power of a bubbler such as when a case of root-rot (pythium) attacks. I had this problem something aweful in my first (poorly-drained) organic coco medium grow. H2O2 solved my issues (scriaficed all good micro-life as well sadly) but I had to keep adding it throughout the grow so I missed out on pro-biotics completely.

Sounds like you have the situation under control, glad to have been informative. Good luck and happy gardening!
