how to ID undercover Leo cars

i was walking by the local metro vehicle maintenance barn and low and behold guess what i saw?

1 white escalade
1 silver escalade
1 red malibu/pimped
1 box van
all had black wheels and tires.
8 leo in full armor and packing to leave. made my heart stop. i pointed it all out to asa and we agree they aint been near here.

all cars need servicing. even leos and leo got they own garage, so makes this easy. i want to go back and take pix of leo. then pass them out...

i kept thinking, ewww. ewww. ewww.

they drive a lot of siezed vehicles so they can really be in anything. I've seen camrys, jeep libertys, chevy pickups, hummers. I had a car chase from an undercover buy unfold right across the street in front of my house (complete with low hovering chopper) and I was quite surprized by the vehicles that showed up.

In and around NYC, I've seen cops in yellow cabs (complete with flashing lights in the grille), white Astro vans with construction logos on them and Camaros. I've heard they ride around in Range Rovers too.

Agreed , undercover officers can be in anything and everything .

Headlights and taillights are the best way to ID standard unmarked patrol cruisers .

trust me this is their work they won't let you know who they are and throw away the amount of time they have already put into the investigation. Only way to go is to prevent, that is how you run your garden and that is how you should run your operation.

Who cares if you can identify a car 15 seconds before the occupants all pile out and rush your house? Its not like they are going to circle the block and wait for you to finish mowing your lawn.

You need to be alarmed in the 10 minutes they sit a half block away while they stage their entrance. In the good ol days all you needed was a halfway decent scanner and you would catch them on their radios during setup.

Now its a little harder since they all use cell phones but still do the same thing. They all jump on their cell's and do a massive chatter-storm right before the bust at the staging area.

Any time a cell phone gets or makes a call they give off large measurable bursts of EMF [ electro magnetic frequncies. ] You can get/make detector units that can be set so they measure normal amounts of daytime/nighttime activity and then alarm at a set threshold when its obvious that theres something else going on close by.

Admittedly this is only going to work if you manage to attract the attention of a large busting drug task force and youre still going to have to decide how to get rid of evidence in short time.. not easy with MJ. Most local cops doing pot busts now tend to stick with smaller groups of officers and call in more if they need them so a multi cell phone detecting device isnt going to help if all the busting officers are in earshot of each other.

Only standard, unmarked police cruisers have the sharp right-angles on their rear lights/reflectors. Every civilian version of that car has rounded reflectors.

Of course, since police departments have started auctioning off their old vehicles, this means there are a ton of civilians driving around the old "unmarked vehicles".

As for the cars they use, don't 90% of the non-standard cars come from seized assets after busts? i.e. they could be driving ANYTHING that the last guy they busted was driving.

Extra set of lamps in back , red tail lights are narrower than standard civilian models of same vehicle .

Edit-just look at pic above for the front of the cruiser

In that scenario , you're right , it's too late . Just cruising down the highway , it's nice to be able to spot one a half mile or so away .

I read about lots of mods but nothing listed about diff tail lights. Easiest way to spot them? All civy models of the crown vic have a full front bench seat.. police models have a split bench seat.

The right-angled brake lights (the ones right next to the license plate) is something that was observed in the South. On a country road, it became very easy to spot a cop from miles away by his tail lights/head lights.

In NYC, there is a fleet of undercover police cars which look light yellow cabs. They wear plain clothes.

These taxis are actually fairly easy to spot by a local (especially those who pay attention to the details).

(Hello copper )

Look at the medallion number. (Those are the four digits in the rooflight that are used to identify one cab from another.) If the first two digits are 6Y or 2W, it's a police car. Then there's the license plate. Real cabs have the four-digit medallion number there, too. Another thing is the black molding strip running across the doors. The Ford Crown Vic taxis that are in service today have a yellow strip, not black.

Don't know about true covert cars, which as people have said can be anything, but unmarked cars in Chicago/Illinois are called M-plates: They have a license plate starting with the letter M, for Municipal. Also, the lettering on the license plate is green, for civilian cars it's blue. Sheriff's cars are S-plates, for Sheriff. Unmarked squads here are mostly Crown vics, maybe a few Impalas.
Of course, they're not hard to spot at all, but because there's so many Crown Vic cabs here (and a lot of the cabbies have the police interceptor package, says so right on the trunk lid) at night it's kind of hard to tell if that car in your rearview mirror is a cab or an unmarked police car, at least until you can spot the cabbies' roof mounted advertisement block... :joint:

A really really clean car is what I look for at first. Most people dont wash their ride but once every few months, if that often. Popo's get washed at least every weekend.

tons of good info in post. thx

just let it be known all cars a cop drives must go through their maintenance barn and INSURED!! iv thought on putting a remote web cam outside my local leos garage and maybe even putting it ol for free. i also know where All confiscated vehix go here, but most those are sold.

the clean cop car is due to jailed ppl. ime i did see a metro pig vacuuming his squad car? maybe he had a messy lunch at dukin doughnuts?

Narc units use drug monies to buy anything they want/need. Watching the watchers is kinda pointless, but I appreciate the tips.
