How to fight root aphids?

I have some root aphids that keep coming back in my gully NFT system. I've ran liquid pyrithum and SM-90. I just cant seem to get rid of them and I cant pull my plants out of the gullies, so I can't dunk them.

Thanks

Amazingly I've used the ole liquid soap/gallon water trick... I think it's like 1tsp of liquid dish soap and 1 gallon of water. Put in sprayer and mist the piss outta anything that moves (in the root zone). I believe the soap suffocates them or something - you can do a search on google to find 'homemade pesticides'. Much better than using a store bought product!!!!

Have you tried a BTi product like Gnatrol or mosquito dunks? They will kill a fairly large number of larval insects and are harmless in normal concentrations.

Are you seeing anything above the roots? If so, drop some sticky traps around the bases of the plants to kill off the adults that made it out before they can lay more eggs.

Some are starting to come out, I got 3000 lady bugs running around the room eating any that dare venture out. Its possible I may have root rot now as well.... my temps are 64 degrees, I thought that it wasn't possible if the temps were that low.... *sigh*

Get yourself something for the roots if you may have any rot coming on.

Rootshield, and Pirhana are both really good root innoculants..real good, not like alot of the bs once at the hydro store with just bacillus subtillus. One thing I do know, is any and all root diseases will progress in a quick minute, especially with an insect in there damaging shit.

Before I moved to where I am at now, I had a Pythium which didn't fuck with anything when I kept my temps below 68-70. Then I moved up to where I am now, near some swamps, and I caught a pythium which was tearing me up with water temps not going over 65. There are 3 main strains of pythium, not that is matters. 1 of them is pretty much indifferent to temperatures. Basically, it means your temps don't matter if you have that one, which you prob do. Buy up them beneficials bud. They aid in pest resistance as well. I'm using the 3-part advanced beneficial system: Pirhana, tarantula, and voodoo juice. Don't be so detered by the price, as you shouldn't really put it in your rez, but innoculate your roots by hand drenching and letting it sit for 12 hours with the lights off. I can make the littel packets last a while, and I've got 6kw.

You may also want to back off the watering in your NFT. I know alot of people think you need to water constantly, or 1on/5off, but you can push it once you have a root mass. Once a root mat has developed, you can water every 1/2 hour, which will let your roots dry out a bit without actually getting dry. The reason for this is that as roots grow and mat, there becomes a capillary network that retains more water then you actually need between the roots. Only do this if your tubes or whatever are shaded though, because you don't want the roots to get too hot between waterings.

I used to run NFT, and got my best yields to date, but the complications were not worth the advantages

You are talking about Root Aphids and not fungus gnats, right? I don't think Gnatrol or Misquito dunks will do you any good. Those are basically for little larva of misquito's, and work on small organic material eating larva such as maggots.

@Ezzy - sounds like you've got fungus gnats? you got little flies buzzing around? Those little worms are they're larva, like maggots, like I mentioned above. I've got plenty of experience with those guys. Like MTF mentioned, there is Gnatrol and misquito dunks, although I don't think the misquito dunks work that well for control of a polutlation, but more as a preventative means. You can also get predatory nematodes. My place can't get gnatrol anymore, so I picked up some of the nematodes, and they work pretty well...as good as gnatrol...which doesn't totally eraditacte the problem, but it keeps the population pretty low

Anyways, sorry about the rant.

hey 20kw-dreams been looking for those predatory nematodes with some luck i did find the only place in the country that has them but unforunatly they wont sell them to me . but the old neem oil works like a treat not instantly over a month or so slows the population rite down then i just hand pik them of the roots. Seems like ive got rid of them annoying things so far. Thanks for the info.
