How to easily stunt your auto-flowers without even trying (oh-oh!)

Auto flowers are (extremely) easy to turn into itty bitty Pixie/gnome style plants. They have a fast metabolism that is relatively easy to disrupt.
You too can produce stunted plants, sadly, without even trying. If that is ones goal, this is very easily achieved.

Autos overall do not handle certain stress' well and can be rather unforgiving to gardening care errors.
Some plants, it seems will get finicky if you look at em wrong., but I suspect I'm imaging that. :)

Stunting auto-flowers is exceedingly easy as they have notoriously sensitive root systems:

The easiest, almost guaranteed method to give the gnome treatment to your plants is to stress out the root system.
Simply disturb the autos root system at any time in the growth process and she will almost certainly stunt/ pygmy it in its track.
To insure this possibility, break up the root ball when transplanting into another pot to anger the plants sensibilities as much as possible, so much that is now going to now "hold its breath" until it stays irreversibly short/ small for life.

Up-potting plants:
is not a SOP with automatics as it is for many working with traditionally cultivated photoperiod type plants.
I and others have attempted to grow regular m/f autos to sexing age (3-4 weeks usually) using various potting techniques with all ending in rather disappointing stunted end results. It can be done, but its a house is probably going to win type of pet.
I like tiny short women, just not in my garden. :)

Home Sweet Home in its final pot is the way to go.
Sprouting in place is an auto flower idea of having a happy, happy birthday and will reward you with better structure, vigor and yield overall.

Auto flowers can yield comparable to a liked size photo period plant when cultivated correctly, especially indoors in a controlled Indoor environment.

I use a clear smaller 9oz. plastic cup (Solocup) , vent holes optional, in order to create a mini-dome environment until the babies pop the surface a day or two later into their plastic nippled 5 gallon organic media airpots that I use.

The feminised type of auto flowers are usually used by many growers as their standard operating procedure (SOP) when planting into that recommended final one and only pot that it will live in until murdered.

Male/female regular auto-flowers roots should treated with kindness also, 50%-ish will need to be replaced/replanted 3-4 weeks later to prevent any undesired pollination, the price one pays for working with this type of easily regeneratable male female auto genetics.

Up-Potting plants:

I and many others have attempted to grow m/f auto-regulars to sexing age (3-4 weeks usually) using various potting techniques with all it ending in rather disappointing stunted end results. It can be done, but its a casino style bet as the casino is going to most likely win that bet.

Itty bitty Pixie/gnome-style plants are what have given autos a bad name. A few growers that lack experience growing autos end up with a Pixie/gnome plant and swear never to grow another auto again. I'm starting to see new autos worth the trouble to grow but haven't grown any. What Autos strains do you recommend? 😎

Hi ,

yes some experiences for sure ,

i did up-pot ( 2 times , a little seed starter 5x5 or 7x7 cm ( for 3-4 days max ) , then 2 to 4 liters upsized pot for 1 or two weeks more ) ,
then transplant them to their final 18 to 25 liters pots , with excellent results ...
i did top them too , with efficient results till i gave them enough to eat ...

I have just recently began to sprout the babies in 4x4 orchid airpots into Coir that has been dosed with the DynoMyco brand of Mycorrhizal inoculant (+ a dilute fish, crab, shrimp hydrolysate) and then I transplant on about the third/4th day usually when I spot the first sign of its tap root, so I do up-pot one time, which is working out quite well in practice. :)

I'm happy to hear that, yes, one can up-pot and not screw the proverbial pooch. :)
I would guess that some strains can handle a bit more root abuse/stress better than others, time will tell.
Different strokes for different folks.

We are collectively destined to figure out eventually all the best possible practices when growing these new fangled (modern) autoflowers, this industry is still in its infancy and extraordinary genetic work is being done by many horticultural brainiacs.
The future is very bright for Autoflowers.

I just did a run with a Bubba Kush auto. Using a new soil that had hardly any nutes. I up potted, fimmed and topped. It got about two feet high and bushy but big lollypop type stems and buds fairly uniform all over. There were two man colas that were bigger. .Just had a smoke of some of it as it's curing. Buds are really airy not dense like usual.

Next grow was going to be direct in the final pot and I might even not do any topping. Plan on growing a couple more autos over the winter. I've got some Ocean Forest soil to compare to the limited nute Pro Mix.

I did the start the seed in its' final home theory and had my best auto run yet. It was only my 3rd attempt. First one I transplanted after a couple of weeks and got mostly gnomes. 2nd grow I planted in the ground outside and the plants grew but only got 18" tall and the buds were filty from being in the wild and so close to the ground. This year, my 3rd try I started all the fem seeds in 15 gallon grow bags. 3 in one bag and 4 in the other. They got 2ft to 3.5 feet, were clean buds, decent size buds that dried dense but softer than a normal bud. They were sticky, had a great smell and had good potency and flavor. I am happy with the smoke.
