How to cut cooltube?

I have a standard cool tube that is made of hard plastic or plexiglass. I want to make the cooltube shorter to fit in a smaller grow cab.

What kind of blade should I use to cut the plastic?

never heard of anyone using plastic but i got some candle holders from walbogs that have a 7" glass tube. perfect for a cooltube without cutting anything. on sale too! bought all they had $10 a pop. i had been looking for a solution other than a bake-a-round due to there small size for quite some time before stumbling onto them.

A fine tooth blade band saw for other than glass. If it is tempered glass it will shatter if a cut is attempted (as in Pyrex). Regular glass can be cut with a masonry diamond saw equipped with a water pump for cooling.

is there a difference in the amount of light blocked by glass compared to the plexi or plastic your using? i always thought glass was the way to go. :bashhead:

It is a standard cool tube like the one pictured below. I don't know what it is made of, but it feels more like plastic than glass.

I was hoping to be able to use a hacksaw.

I have cut the aluminum ends back to where they meet the glass and it works alright but you can only gain a few inches overall and that might not be enough.

I have shattered a couple as well just trying to cut the ends off. The vibration from the saw will shatter it pretty easy so watch out.

You do not have to shorten it, size the holes at either side of the mini-micro grow cabinet, insert the tube, and let a little stick out both sides. HD aluminum foil, if needed, can be wrapped around the externally exposed ends and will take care of light leakage.

Why are you trying to make the light fit IN the cabinet, make or acquire a cabinet that accommodates the THE TUBE and the rest of the equipment you intend mount internally. Reminds me of women with size 14-Wide gunboats trying to fit into a size 7 magic slipper.

I have a very small closet to build my new cabinet in. The cool tube with ducting connected is wider than the space available. I already have 3 cool tubes - that's why I wanted to try to modify them.

I guess I'll have to make one with a Bake-a-Round. I've searched for hurricane lamps online to use for a tube because they are cheaper than Bake-a-Rounds, but they don't state the dimensions.

About 45 years ago while attending college I worked nights at a Leed's Shoe Store. There was a never ending supply of 350 pound hairy legged heifers trying on Size 7's. No matter how many times I used the shoe stretcher they still wouldn't fit. Then they would storm out of the store. Hopefully they went to Abercrombie & Fitch for Snow Shoes, with feet that big they could have water skied barefoot.

After re-measuring everything, I realize I don't have enough space for any kind of cool tube.

I'm gonna have to build a section in the grow box for the light that is separated by glass and exhausted.

Anyone know of a thread where that has been done?
My cab is 20"x20"x90"

why not try a vertical setup? only one light would be needed and there is a ton of potential! check out my cab might give you an idea how to accommodate your current setup to work. i got a super small space with nearly all of it used as canopy. the netting is about 6 feet long and 18 inches tall. thats a full square yard in 28x22x18inch space. i think it's pretty cool. check out the link in my sig.

That's a nice setup, but I'm wanting to do something like this SOG...

Green, once you kneel down to fit a pair on one of those 350 pound Milk Maids YOU WILL know that there is a better way to make a living.

Spliffman, "Al Bundy"? not even, bite your tongue son. Try Archie Bunker with a wee bit of Redd Fox added for that "extra spicy" touch.
