How much bleach is safe?

Long story short... I store water for winter use in 1000 liter tanks cause I have no running water to my barn and I live in the freezing north. Last winter I had one tank go nasty on me cause I guess I didn't get it completely clean and sterile.

This year I figure I'll dump a bit of bleach in each vessel to keep it clean, question is how much?

Are you talking about adding bleach to water youre going to drink, or adding bleach to water just to rinse and sterilize and then dump out?

If your going to drink it, healthlinkbc.ca says to add two drop per liter of water you are going to consume.

If your just going to add bleach to water to sterilize the container and then dump out the solution, the Clorox website says to use two teaspoons per gallon of water.

Drinking safety is 4 ppm, or 4 ml's in my 1000 liter tank. I recently read that someone put 0.6 ml's per gallon bleach in there rez, which would come to more like 150 ppm.

Just looking for someone that knows...

Edit: This is for water that will be used to water the garden with salts based foods.

Third,
If you want a sterile medium use bleach. If you want a herd, filter the water after it comes out of storage tanks. Seems to me that if it's drinking water safe it should be OK for your plants. Good luck. -granger
