How many strains do we know?

Does anyone know an approx number of how many different strains there is and say a number of Indicas, Sativas, Hybrid and autoflowering strains? Are we talking hundreds or tousands or is it just a few true strains and all the other no more true breed than a street dog?

Se *d f* n d e r has lot's of organizing these things. I believe it's mostly european work and some norther american. Certainly not everything.

Lot's of old school 'breeders' had the same varieties with their own selection. Important to note that strain is a cut and variety is a breed.

A strain is not a cut... A strain is a variety that has been worked (STRAINED) to the point of breeding true for a given set if traits.

A cut is a cultivar is an individual plant.

There are very few true breeding strains (varieties) within the thousands that are publicly available.

S33dfinder is a decent source of information but its far from conclusive & some of the info is inaccurate. After all, the info is input by regular Joes & Janes like you & I.

Blueberry is a seed variety.

Wedding Cake is a clone only individual plant, a cultivar.

Strain is a scientific reference to a virus or bacteria.

Calling an herb "strain" is "bro science" but acceptable in stoner talk/culture. Better than saying "strand".

We are a bit relaxed when it comes to terminology. An example is BX1 vs BC1.

Without DNA genome sequencing everything there is really no way to tell how related things really are. Just grow what suits your taste and have a good time.

More than you could ever grow in a 10 lifetimes. :tiphat:

BTW: Wouldn't clones be strains then according to this quote and link below?
Since all clones from a specific plant all share the same ancestor.

The term has no official ranking status in botany; the term refers to the collective descendants produced from a common ancestor that share a uniform morphological or physiological character.

Can you please go deeper and explain why?
Yes well this is based on my Cannabis breeders bible by ED Grene Blueberry has been crossed with itself many times and due to inbreeding it has become very stable so for example out of 10 seeds you won't find much variation. but if you were to Pop a pack of triangle mints a.k.a. Wedding cake you would see great variation in the results as it is a cross of triangle kush and animal mints. And to my friend who said Wedding cake is a clone only, is it really when the seeds it came from are still available and both the mother and father plant are still out there?
